Hi all,

DS is 2.5 and is getting fairly good at toileting himself (both wees and poos). He much prefers the potty as he can do it himself, but will use the toilet readily enough (e.g. when out and about or occasionally at home).

So far he has always sat down to wee (except for one incident which DH described as "disastrous" ). Anyway, just wondering when boys generally start standing up. I'm happy to keep going as is - it is working just fine and really want to make sure he has got it down pat - but he will be starting preschool in 5 months and I don't want his preschool teacher to cop the brunt of another disastrous incident if he decides to copy the other boys!

DS started doing standing wees at 3.5.

DS is 33 months and stands to do his wees. He's been copying his dad on the toilet for awhile. Maybe just buy a small stool and put a ping pong ball in the toilet and get him to aim at it to encourage it.

Around 3ish...they will want to copy other kids at daycare or their dad

Mine started standing at about 22 months..he had 3 months of sitting and then just watched dad..we got him a little stool and he's been weeing standing up ever since..

My DS has done both since the start. DH first taught him standing up i thnk. He just does whatever he feels like each time. And if he is doing a poo on the toilet he will do a wee while sitting there anyway. We have a stool at each toilet and he uses this if he feels like it, but you will usually find that with the toilet seat up he will be tall enough to put his willy over the edge and wee straight into the bowl. A little hint for less mess is to get him to straighten his willy out before weeping. DS's is usually all crumpled up and kind of stuck to itself and his testicles after bein in his undies, so if he doesn't straighten it up it wees at all angles and down his legs and clothes etc. Also teach him to give it a little shake at the end to get any excess wee off.

I might give him another few months of sitting down to really cement the whole toilet-training process, then I'll let him try it standing up. (Well actually I'm going to let DH be in charge of that process....)

ETA: We have a little step-stool already, but I'll definitely try the ping-pong ball, what a nifty idea!!

My eldest was two. My younger one was 18 months. DD2 toilet trained himself early as he saw his big brother get rid of his night nappies and wanted to be just like his big brother. He got rid of day and night nappies at the same time .

My boys never sat down to urinate. We trained them to aim in the potty and then when they were about three to aim in the toilet.
