Pretty silly...thankfully everyone is alright.
That being said I am sure she would not be alone in her ignorance about the possible dangers sad.gif

I try to not be judgemental about 'stupid' things. People do all sorts of things that other would consider 'stupid' - putting kids in shopping trolleys, for example.
It wasn't that long ago that people had open fires in houses for warmth. It might not be obvious to all that a barbecue would pose a hazard.
ETA - I'm sure that newspaper article was published as a public message to warn others, not to mock the lady in question.

Personally, I also think that one would need to do something knowingly horrible to earn 'worst MIL' badge, not just something a bit ignorant.
Besides, why call her a MIL? Must we demonise MILs so much? Surely she is the children's father mother, and thus, mostly simply, the grandmother.

I guess if you don't know, you don't know.

An education campaign is what is needed, not to call someone stupid for being uneducated....

All Mustelidae wrangled. Except badgers. Drama llamas by appt.
I have to agree with PPs

I was expecting this thread to be about some woman who was doing something dreadful to her son's wife. Turns out it was about a woman who did something pretty stupid but apparently meant well and had no idea she could be harming anyone.

Hardly a contender for "worst MIL" IMO.

This topic would be better re-titled to a warning about carbon monoxide, not ridiculing a woman who didn't know about the dangers of bringing a barbecue indoors.

I like to think that I am rather intelligent and educated, and while I would never bring a barbecue indoors, I would not have been able to specifically tell you about the carbon monoxide.

And yeah - why MIL?

They were possibly not aware of the danger and may be from a cultural background where they are not encouraged to question the actions of their husbands' mother.

Perhaps some clearer warnings on these types of barbecues would help.

I don't think stupidity is the problem here, just ignorance.

It's got nothing to do with her being a MiL, or even a grandmother. She was just a person who made a pretty bad mistake.
Some of the threads on here have what I'd consider to be even worse MiL's, ones who victimise their son's wives and children and play off one person against another. This woman just made a stupid mistake.
The other adults might not have realised it was not the right thing to do either, and possibly the child got sick so fast it never occurred to anyone at the time.
