I've seen a lot of articles that basically say the western diet is really acidic, which makes your body acidic, which leads to a lot of diseases from cancer to diabetes.

I did think it was just hype BUT I have developed stomach issues. I'm only mid 20's and I get shocking heartburn, I've had a possible ulcer, and I'm now on high dose acid blockers which don't always help. I have improved with removing milk from my diet but I'm still really sensitive to what I eat and it sucks!

Was complaining to mum about my aching legs the other day, evidently this is a symptom of too much acid.

So EB, should I overhaul my diet to one of bananas and avocado?

Can you link to any of said articles? I'd be interested to see them

IMO, anything that peddles something as a "cure-all" is generally a gimmick.

Like anything, balance is the key. It makes sense to me that an excess of anything will cause problems. As for alkaline water- sounds gimmicky to me.

Give me my coffee and no one gets hurt!!!
ACA says alkaline diets are a fad. biggrin.gif http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8588722

As to all those waters with added Vitamins and minerals etc. they don't do anything for you at all.

If it is something that has only just started bothering you and you've just started using acid blockers then tha leg achesmay be related to your meds. Your should speak to you GP about it.

I personally don't buy into any of this sort of stuff.
That said, a friend of mine had a 21yo daughter who was diagnosed with end stage metastatic liver cancer and given 3-6 months to live. They completely over hauled their diets, got fully into the no sugar diet, alkaline water and other alternative therapies.
She recently passed away but it was more than 5 years after her initial diagnosis, so I do think it helped them.

Gimmick. I had ache-y legs and other issues (non-itchy hives, cold sensitivity etc) and ended up being diagnosed with an auto-inflammatory syndrome. Get other things checked out first by the specialists and GP.

Umm where are they measuring the acidity/alaklinity in the body? The blood? -The pH range they mention (7 - 7.5) is wildly inaccurate, and at either end of that range you would be very sick and/or close to dead.

I think they are confused about the definition of alkalosis too:I
QUOTE
f our pH levels increase the body’s systems become compromised, causing inflammation and lowered immunity.
An increased pH IS Alkalosis, a decreased pH is Acidosis.

It's bollocks.

The body maintains a very tight acid/base homeostasis.
It is very difficult to disrupt that and if it happens you are very ill.

I have chronic inflammation and it is actually the immune system turned ON, not suppressed. Inflammation is one of the first defence parts of the immune system.

I have to take a daily medication that suppresses my immune system to reduce the inflammation.

Causing inflammation and suppressing the immune system at the same time makes no sense.
