I bought a packet of $1 pens from BIG W and they just don't work that good at all...I thought it was a joke if I took them back, they were only a $1.

But...shoud $1 pens work?

Say I bought 20 packets to give to a classroom of kids..I would expect to get my money's worth
or am I the fool for buying them?

They were for me....
I seem to have a stack of pens these days that don't work that well.

Complain to BIG W or learn a lesson?

Yes they should work. Anything you buy should be fit for the intended use....you bought them to write with as that's how they are supposed to be used, you can't write with them so they aren't fit for intended use.

I like cats, but I couldn't eat a whole one.
I think you should expect them to work but not be surprised if they didn't. I'd probably chalk it up to experience.

If I had bought one pack and they didn't work, I would probably just email them with the issue.

If I bought 20 packs for a classroom, I would return them.

But you are well within your rights to return them as they are not fit for purpose (which is writing).

I bought a pack of pens for $1 from Big W a few months ago. Not one of them worked well. I just threw them away. It was going to cost me more in fuel than they were worth to return them.

Which begs the question. Why would a company produce something so cheap that it is useless for its purpose.
So their whole business model is basically, we can produce them cheap, it's what people want, we can sell them at this price, but they won't actually work and so end up in landfill.
ETA I've not bought these pens but I once bought similar stationery from Kmart that was useless.
