New to all this charting thing!

Just put a ticker in and it says i don't start ovulate for another 7 days.

I got my AF on the 28th December finish on the 2nd of January, does that mean my ticker is right that i will ovulate in 7 days?

I am so confused.

Women tend to ovulate around 14 days before their period starts, plus or minus a few days. So in a 28 day cycle that would be 15 days from the beginning of the cycle (day one of period). So 28th Dec as day one plus 14 days is the 11th, 7 days from now. Of course if you don't have a 28 day cycle it will be different and as I said, there is a range anyway.

ETA you don't start to ovulate, ovulation is an event. One second you haven't ovulated, the next you have kind of thing.

Hi Melrose! PP is correct - the ticker is taking an 'average' cycle length but in all honesty, cycle lengths can vary dramatically !
As has already been suggested, I would recommend Fertility friend for charting as well as buying a BBT themometer. Over time, you will be able to build up a good picture of your own cycles. That said, even for one person there can be lots of variation from month to month (for example, over five months I O'd on CD 12, CD 15 (twice) and CD 17 (twice).
I stumbled upon your other post and it sounds like you've been TTC for a while. I was amazed to learn that we really only have a 2-4 day window to fall pregnant so it's harder than it sounds and it all comes down to timing. This is where charting can help ... identifying which time is 'best' or ideal for conception to occur. Good luck!

I haven't got one yet, but have looked into it. Yes, you can buy them online - I've found them on eBay for less than $15 - just search for basal thermometer. You really just need a digital thermometer that reads to 2 digital places, but some of these are specifically designed so that you can temp vaginally, which is meant to be more accurate than orally. I think most people would start with the oral temping, but move on to the other method after a while, so probably better to buy a basal thermometer in the first place.

Some of the ones on eBay come with opk test & pregnancy tests, so they may work out to be good deals too

You don't have to buy a basal thermometer. I have been using a normal digital one and for me, I have no problems and have clear charts. Never saw the need to buy something when I had a few already.
For some woman the extra decimal place can make all the difference.

You will find alot of ladies dont ovulate on CD14 like the ticker says, I personally didnt ovulate until CD17 pretty much every cycle even though my cycle was 28 days. Charting is GREAT! Some ladies don't need a basal thermometer but it can make a huge difference for others, I got mine off ebay for around $14. I think the best advice I could give you would be to temp vaginally, especially if you are a open mouth sleeper like me and also set an alarm to take your temp the same time every morning

be sure the themometer goes to 2 decimal places
otherwise it will just confuse your charts with its vagueness
and a ticker has nothing to do with your event times of your actual cycles... thats what the charting is for
