Does anyone know approximately how much installation of a split system airconditioning is? We're renting, but completely willing to pay for a (relatively cheap) unit and installation to make our time here more comfortable (we expect to be here for a few years) and obviously leave it here when we go.

I was looking at this unit: Aircon

DH installs, $600 for a basic back to back install extra if you need power run to it. It gets more expensive if the outside unit is further away from the inside one original.gif.

Very basic rough figure (in Vic).

We just had aircon installed in our investment property and it was $700 for the install (had to be hard wired to the metre box so it wasn't straight forward) and $600 for the unit, so just to be safe, I think you should expect upwards of $1200, especially if the installer provides the unit.

We found the split system unit on special at one of the big retailers, so if you look around you might get a cheap one but the install will be around $600-$800 regardless.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! From what I can tell it should be simple, with the unit able to go on the outside immediately behind where it would be inside. And I just remembered that I'm pretty sure my dad (or maybe friend of) can install them - might need to investigate that!

You have to make sure the installer has an air-conditioning component to their electrical license because they deal with refrigeration, so it can't just be a regular electrician.

Also, you need to check if you want it just plugged into a socket in the house (which might be a bit cheaper) or hardwired to the meter box, like we did. To plug it into a regular socket, you have to make sure the circuit can handle the pressure of a power guzzler like aircon, otherwise you'll need it take back to the meter box and given its own circuit.

Hope that makes sense!

I'd also try graysonline first, we grabbed two new ones about 5 years ago for less than $500 each and they haven't skipped a beat.

Have you spoken to your landlord yet? I only ask because if my tenant wanted air-conditioning I would probably just do it for them (it pays to keep a good tenant happy). biggrin.gif It might be worth a try, there is certainly no harm in asking. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip, there wasn't anything on there, but I looked around and Bunnings have one for $489!

No we haven't yet, the trouble is actually getting the REA to pass on messages wink.gif But I'll get in touch and try to force the issue, at least just to get permission. We like it here so we don't mind footing the bill, though of course it would be nice if he did pay for it biggrin.gif
