I have an almost 1 year old who is very small for his age at almost 8kgs. His height is in proportion to his weight, he's not skinny he's just a little guy like his mum & dad. Whenever I go to the dr they just say that's fine so long as he's meeting all his milestones which has never been a problem but now he is turning 1 he doesn't crawl (he shimmys around on his belly abit don't know if that counts) or attempt to pull himself up on any furniture, I have noticed all the other babies his age I know (there is a big group of them from various mothers groups ect) are very confidently crawling, pulling them selves up, walking around furniture & even standing on there own so now I'm worried that maybe he isn't meeting his milestones? I know all children develop very differently & I know with him being so small he won't be as strong but is there an age where if your child cannot crawl or pull themselves up you should seek advice?

WHo have delelopmental achievement graphs
http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/m...ndows_graph.pdf http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/m...s/en/index.html FWIW my kids did not walk until 16.5, 17.5 and 19.5m of age. To work on the pulling to stand do you have a play table that they like to stand at. My kids also started the pull to stand from a lower plane (ie we had a sofa which could flip out, but actually just pulled it out and they could use it as a step and smaller item to get themselves to stand). DS 1 was 3% boy so tiny too. He is now 7yrs and very smart, but still tiny. This post has been edited by lsolaBella: 04/01/2013, 04:31 PM |

My DD took longer to hit her milestones. She's now 16 months, has only been walking for 3 weeks and has just started counting "1, 2, 3" and her vocabulary has doubled in 2 weeks!!
But if you're concerned, go with your instincts. |

Do you have an MCN where you are? I've found them excellent for helping assess what milestones are relevant for age.
My GP has also been excellent - although this may be because she has an interest in pediatrics. Without wanting to worry you, I would be seeking advice now on your DS. I think the lack of crawling, pulling to stand etc is something worth discussing with a professional. If its all in order there's no harm done, however if there are indications of potential delays early intervention can work wonders. |

See if you can get into a paed physio, as well.
I don't want to be alarmist and it's likely to be nothing, but my DS has a chromosomal abnormality which was only picked up due to poor weight gain. His developmental delays are more obvious now as he is 19 months, but in those earlier days it was not so clear. Whats the harm in getting him seen? |

What was his early developmental milestones like? When was he able to sit unsupported?
May be useful to see a physio, he may have low tone, or just need some extra help, always best to check it out. Your gp may have answers and some advice as well. DS didn't start crawling until he hit 12months, not long after crawling he started pulling himself up on furniture, but then didn't walk until he was almost 2. I know how hard it can be not to compare to other babies in mothers groups etc... I remember other babies, all crawling around, some pulling up on furniture, and DS couldn't even sit, he was still rolling around on the floor. |
