I sent a cheque to a family member and had the letter registered. They live in another state. I realised, with all the holidays that it wouldn't get there at the usual time. I initially wanted to send it 'next day delivery' but Aust. Post told me it was outside the postal delivery area and would take longer.
I opted for registered post.

The Cheque is a surprise gift and a large sum of money. I have enclosed it in a card.

I keep checking everyday to see if it has arrived.
Aust. Post told me yesterday that it is sitting in the local post office.

It was suppose to be delivered to the door and signed. If they are not home, it gets sent to the post office and a card placed in their door or on their doorstep or letterbox.

I was talking to a lady this morning and she said it still hasn't been picked up!

She said, "It could have blown away from the doorstep or their letterbox could not be secure enough and it has blown away.' You may need to tell them to go and pick it up". Or it could be sitting on their front door step and they have overlooked it."
If I had assumed this was going to happen I wouldnt have sent it registered post....

Ok. I didn't spend a whole lot of money to send it registered but the purpose of me sending it registered is to secure it.

I didnt want to have to tell the person to go to the Post office. At the end of the day I wanted this to be a surprise.

It could be a case of the person not picking it up yet....

I didnt want to send it paypal or be placed in the person's account.
I've enclosed it in a special card and wanted the two to be together. It contains some special words.Sometimes I like doing things the 'old fashioned way'

Not sure what to do....
Just wait or let them know it is there...but don't want to appear pushy.
I know the people are home. They were on holidays but got back nearly two weeks ago.

Generally the Post Office should send 2 warning cards if a registered parcel is not collected and then after a certain date if it's not collected then it should be posted back to you.

Do you know if the Post Office has sent out the second collection card?

I'd say they haven't received notice. That isn't to say that Australia Post didn't leave something, just that since they got home it's gone missing and they haven't seen it. Did the lady on the phone say they will send a reminder to them?
Could they try and deliver it again with other parcels going to the same area?
If not, I think you'll just have to bite the bullet and tell them to go pick it up. It will still be a surprise, just not unexpected like you wanted.

No I dont think 2nd reminder has gone out.

I assumed they would have left the card that is why the letter is at the post office for collection.

Might have to just send an SMS...drats..didnt want to do this.

Is it possible that the people concerned are having money problems, and are worried that a registered post item might be from a debt collector? I had a friend that got herself in some strife and refused to pick up registered post items for this reason.

I would expect that Aus Post have done what they should be registered post at this stage. I know for me, I often take a while to pick up registered post items if I'm not expecting anything because the post office particularly at this time of year is a complete pain to go to. Do you also know whether or not it is possible they have gone away for a few days as that could also be why they haven't picked it up. Like Casime I also know of people who avoid picking up unexpected registered post presuming it is not a good thing coming for them.

I would say that Australia Post has done the right thing - kept the item safe and will release it when signed for. If they haven't sent the reminder card yet then they won't return to sender for a bit, maybe try and find out when that will be and if it's not picked up shortly after send the text.

I would bite the bullet and contact them.

Not worth the stress of you worrying about Aussie post doing the right thing.

You can still make it mysterious by saying there is a late chrissy present at the post office. Without saying what it is.

The surprise and gratitude will he no less and they will get a kick out of the excitement of picking it up and wondering what it is.
