I would really appreciate some advice on buying a mattress for my 2.5 year old, who will be going into a single bed very soon (she's cracked it post-holiday, and now hates her cot so now is the time).

Her bed is actually a top bunk, set up as a single bed. But, because it will eventually be set up as a top bunk, the mattress can't be too thick otherwise there's not enough clearance for the rails.

Can anyone suggest a good mattress or a good place to buy a mattress? I'd be happy to buy online, since we'll have to pay a delivery fee anyway even if we buy locally.

We spent almost $400 on my son's first mattress, and that was already 40% off. I'm happy to buy a good quality mattress, but it seems like the good ones are really thick. Can you get a good mattress that's a bit thinner? Latex maybe?

We got the double, but I am really surprised how good they are. When they first came out, I thought no way would they be any good, but after reading the reviews, we bought one.

It's 17cm deep by the way.

DD2 got a really good quality kids specific mattress when we got her a bed. Bought it from a bed place. Paid about $400. It was a sealy or something. Worth every cent. It's very comfortable to sleep on even for me.

With DD3 we just got her a cheap mattress (spent about $100). Bad idea. It's got very thin padding and I can feel the springs on it so it's very uncomfortable for me to lay on. For DD3 it's fine because she's very light and she gets a good night sleep. This was the justification for getting it. Probably should've bought a better one but we'll replace it in the next 3-4 years as she gets heavier.

So my recommendation is to go to a bed place and lay on some of the mattress. It doesn't have to be a kids specific one. But I'd get something good quality if you can afford it. And chances are if it's comfortable for you, it will be for your child. Don't get something too soft though. You don't have to buy it there but use this as a starting point to then look for a good price.

Our kids love their foam mattresses. You can get them in a variety of thicknesses.

make sure you check how heavy it is. the mattress that DS has is so heavy that I have trouble making his bed & that is a normal bed, I would hate to try and do it on the top of a bunk

I bought a cheap $100 from fantastic when my kids moved from cot to bed.
Even with mattress protectors ext they still managed to get lots of pee over them. I plan on upgrading once they ate clear of accidents.

We ended up with another Sealy from Myer's 40% off sale, but with a plan to not use it on the top bunk. When we want to put the bunk back together, we'll put a foam mattress on it and buy a separate single for DD. It'll be handy to have the extra spare bed for visitors.
