We are due to start or first IVF cycle in February but cant have egg pick up before the 11th. With 3 weeks on the pill to bring on a period to start the cycle, when would be a safe date to aim for as day 1? Im thinking maybe Feb 1st.

The paperwork has us down for a flare cycle on 300 iu of gonal f and I have in the past been slow to respond on my IUI cycles but we are hoping that wont be the case with the higher dose and my first ultrasound is to be booked for day 8.

My current cycle is not due to end until the 12th or 13th, I don't need to wait for that period to arrive to start the pill do I?

Can't give much advise but I had to start BCP on day 1 of my last cycle. My IVF nurse said it had to be started then and worked out that my January cycle would be too late. So I've already been on the BCP for 3 weeks now and have to just keep taking the active pills.

Hi Allie, so they have already booked your transfer? Does that mean thing usually run more predictably with IVF? We had some very unpredictable IUI cycles which drove me nuts and so we decided to move on to IVF. I was just told to start the pill 3 weeks before we wanted our day 1. Which was to be the 17th Jan but when i checked with my heath fund we are able to start earlier.

I was slow to start off with with my IUI's, but I responded quickly on IVF.

My IUI were with injectables. We had a good first cycle with 3 follies at 100iu but then it went down hill after that taking weeks and upto 200 iu just to get 1 follie that im sure i could have produced on my own without the drugs anyway. Its good to know that you had a better response when you moved to IVF.

I'm not sure about timing etc having not done any sort of AC before. All I know is that my local IVF clinic only runs for one week every six weeks and so they have to try to be fairly spot on with transfer dates. That's why I had to start the BCP so early, so they have full control of my cycle. Apart from that I don't really know anything about what is going to happen, what drugs I have to take etc! Guess I should start looking into all of that!

I would check with your IVF nurse. With our cycle I was told exactly what date to start the pill so they could time it in with the clinic cycles as they did the epu and transfers on a 6 weekly cycle so they timed everyone to fit in with their schedule. I was given a list if date of what to start and when, no thinking required!!

I've always started the pill on Day 1 in the lead up to a stim cycle. Your clinic should be the ones telling you when to start. I get a treatment plan telling me dates for everything. I wouldn't wing it cos you might mess up your cycle. Give them a ring.

I would call but they are not there till next week and i of course want to know now I do have a full treatment plan but it was arranged for a later pick up because the nurse thought that our health fund may not pay if we went earlier.

I also always started either day 1 or day 5 depending on the cycle type. I do remember hearing that starting the pill somewhere random in a cycle could contribute to a cyst (basically a follicle that started to develop but then ovulation did not occur properly). This happened when we had a donor cycle and it was one of the possible explanations for why the egg donor had a cyst. It did resolve itself but delayed the cycle by more than a month. So I would wait until you can confirm with the clinic just to be safe.
