Hi All,
Baby number 2, a boy child, is due in a few weeks, and we are struggling to agree on a name. A few months ago a friend suggested to my husband we call him Reggie. Background: DH's grandfather was Reginald, apparently an all around top guy and a bit of a family legend (I never met him) and DH's MN is Reginald, a lot of his friend's call him Reg or Reggie as an affectionate nickname. When the subject came up at Christmas it was very well received by DH' family except, ironically by his father, who thinks it's far to big and old fashioned a name for a little boy. I've always thought we were naming someone for life, not just their childhood, and while "old man chic" hasn't had quite the resurgence as girl's names have, I do know of a couple of little Arthur's and Alberts out there and both work well. My younger brother is named after his great grandfather and while his name is less "controversial" as he has grown up that family link has meant alot to him, and I do love the concept of using family names. So except for the family history and DH's enthusiasm this would NEVER be a name which would be on my radar or under consideration, but as it would make my husband so happy, I'm doing my best to consider it fully. (I have so many gorgeous names we could use if DH would consider them. Sigh. ) I don't actually mind Reggie, but I don't think I could handle Reggie or Reg on the birth cert, and I have been unable to find an alternative version of Reginald I prefer, if I did I think my husband would be happy to compromise. Using it as a middle name to honor his grandfather doesn't really cut it is already DH middle name. Anyway, I really want your completely HONEST opinions (which I know I'll get!) Has anyone given their child a name they didn't love because their other half wanted it and gone on to regret it? Does anyone know any little Reggie's/ Reginald's running around out there? Oh, and if it sounds like I'm being a martyr here or pressured into it, absolutely not, all I have to do is say no and it will be off the list, I just know how much it would mean to DH. |

I'm not a fan of the name, but the background story is cool, and you'd be sure he wouldn't be 1 of 7 other Reginalds in his kindy class!!
It's a hard one to find alternatives to!! Only Regis and Regan... But Regan makes me think of a girl because of King Lear ( I'm a bit of a Shakespeare nut though). If you aren't super keen could you use it as a middle name? |

My pop and uncle were Reginald - Reg
Doesn't rock my boat. GP's also had a Colin, a Kenneth and a Desmond (so Col, Des, Ken and Reg) - very popular back then, pretty ordinary now though (IMO) |

I don't like it but as I have said in other posts I know of people who I didn't like their baby names to begin with but now couldn't imagine them to be anything else. The one upside to your choice is it will also suit him as he ages unlike other names that might be "cute" at birth but not so much as an adult.
Also like the story behind it! |

Don't mind Reggie, but not big on Reginald or Reg.
Being an Archie comics fan, it reminds me of the character Reggie Mantle. |

My DH loved it. I was on the fence with no family history. I think it's the kind of name that will grow in you, I do actually like it now.
DH wouldn't agree to any of the boy names I liked with ds2, so in the end I went with the name at top of his list which was Albert. I didnt mind it, but wasn't in love with it either. It's really grown on me and now I love it, but it did take several months. Fwiw Reggie reminds me of that girl on big brother, so I would nickname Reg. Good luck! |
