I'm 28 weeks pregnant tomorrow and for the past 6 days I've been sick. It started as a sore throat on day one. I thought it was a result of me being run down from work, renos and Xmas, but seems it's not going to pass that easily.
The problem is this horrible cough I have developed. It keeps me (& DH) at night and is so persistent that my throat now feels completely raw. I saw a GP yesterday (my shared care GP is on holidays) and we have a plan for medication. (I also had a swab done for parapertussis as family members had it recently and we saw them once there were apparently past the contagious period. I've had the pertussis (whopping cough) adult booster shot but this unfortunately cannot cover parapertussis). I'm wondering if you guys can suggest any pregnancy-friendly natural remedies to soothe my throat? So far I've been gargling salt water, having hot drinks of lemon, honey & ginger, teaspoons of honey, lemonade ice blocks, Strepsils etc. These provide relief for a short while. Is there anything else I can be trying? My ribs are getting so sore from the coughing, DHs sleep is disrupted by this along with his back pain, I'm exhausted and now feeling miserable. If you can find a 'natural' type chemist around you, there are some homeopathic remedies you can get that are safe during pregnancy.
I got a horrendous flu with DS1 when I was 36 weeks and swear I wouldn't have survived without them lol Good luck OP, I hope you feel better soon Xx |

Hi there,
I had pneumonia in my second pregnancy and coughed for months - I know how you feel! I ended up taking codeine at night for a while just so I could get some sleep (it is an excellent cough suppressant). Panadeine or mersyndol both have codeine and the pharmacist said both are OK in pregnancy. They worked for me, and didn't seem to do any harm. That baby is now a teen and she's fine. Hope you're feeling better soon OP. |

The original Fishermen's Friend lozenges (in a white pack.). Break them in half if you find them too hot.
