Hi all, as a guy (DH) I probably shouldn't be posting here, but I'm looking for opinions on a nem for our first son (due Feb).
I'm Irish, and DW is Mexican...so the name has to be pronouncable in both places. We want to avoid kids giving our son a horrible nickname (Ozzy for Oscar). Another issue is that my last name is Smith, so it needs to go with Smith.
The name we love is Rogi (not sure how to spell it - But prounounced like Rodgie).
But we want to give him a proper full name - he could be Roger or Rodrigo.
What are your thoughts on Roger Smith vs Rodrigo Smith....and calling him Rogi?
Another name I liked in Sebastian Smith, but fear him being called Seb.

I think Rodrigo is nicer than Roger. Sebastian is a great name.

Its really hard to avoid nicknames, I think they pretty much happen anyway and you have little control over them to be honest.

I would be more concerned with the nicknames that came from Rodger, to be honest.

Rodrigo is a great name. Not keen on Rodger. Both go with Smith well.

I prefer Rodrigo to Rodger. I love Sebastian. (I know a half Guatemalan-half Australian Sebastian, NN Sebas).

We have an Oscar - never been called Ozzy by anyone. He does get Osc by people, or Osci (family only).

There are so many great Spanish names that also have an Anglo tie.

How about:
* Eduardo (Edward - Ed or Ned for nn)
*Mateo (Matthew)
*Antonio (Anthony - Tony as nn)

I think my favourite is Pascual though. Love it.

I like Sebastian. Yiu could probably also do Roderick and get Rogi as a nickname.
Roger would probably get a lot of teasing.

Don't like Roger sounds like an old mans name
Not too fussed on Rodrigo
Love Sebastian!
FWIW I have children with long names that can easily be shortened or have a nickname and I have always told people no there name is such and such if they do abbreviate it straight away. Knowing this they get called their full names.

I think Rodrigo, NN Rogi, is fantastic! Since he is getting your last name, Smith, I think a first name that is "Mexican" would be fantastic, and it's a very cool nickname. Well done!

I also don't like Sebastian purely because I strongly dislike the NN Seb.

Firstly OP, of course you're welcome to post here as a dad! There's a few guys who are around the boards here, as well as a few of us non- birth partners too.

However, I'm not a huge fan of either Roger or Rodrigo - Roger less so due to the *ahem* sexual innuendo attached to the name, as well as the little grey alien Roger Smith from American Dad (although the show is probably on its last legs and definitely won't be around forever).

The other thing is that you might want to call him Rogi but schoolmates might call a Rodrigo "Roddy" or "Rigo" or "Smithy" even - and names such as mine which are really hard to nickname can get shortened to just first initial. I don't think you can ever define a NN, but as long as you're okay with all the possibilities then Rodrigo is a stronger choice than Roger.

I do love Sebastian, but agree he will probably get Seb or Bastian as NNs. Admittedly though, I would prefer both to Rogi.
