hi,

During the evening ( ~6-8pm) was quite unbearable. Nearly every day, baby will scream at that time. After the minutes of scream and crying, he will suddenly return to a very quiet baby and continue to sleep! Like today, he has just been fed half or one hour ago, screamed and cried so severely that he finally spit lots of milk.

Before, I will pick him up , hold and cuddle him, and comfort him cos I think he had a bad dream. However, the same didn't seem to work and the screaming time seems longer.

any solutions?
tks

My first DD always did this on days she had less day sleep. If she had more sleep in the day she had good evenings. So, for her it was over tiredness.

All 3 of mine have done this. I find wrapping baby, giving a dummy and rocking to sleep in a dark room works. If I have to get stuff done I put bub in a baby carrier and he sleeps on me for that time.

Good luck!

My second used to do this. I would just hold her and it was every evening for a month or two and then she just grew out of it. She's about to turn 12. None of my others did it.

I used to sit in dark room on a rocking chair on the bad nights. With the baby!
Lots of feeding and skin on skin time, some people swear by a warm bath with lavender baby bath stuff as well. but that only works if the baby likes a bath, which a lot don't in the early weeks.

Proud BFAR mum 12 months!
DD1 did this until 3 months and DD2 has just started to do it also. They make a lot of gurgling sounds so I think with mine it's reflux and hurting their throat. I turn off all the lights in the house except one dim one, move everything out of the hallways, wrap them up, hold them upright and walk up and down the halls and around the house. DH spent hours last night trying to calm DD2 and I finally took her off him and did that and she was asleep in less than 10 mins, he thought it was magic! On a really bad night I had to sleep upright on the couch with DD on my chest. They grow out of it at 3-4 months so you just have to get through the days.

I will probably think of something witty to say later.
Yes, they do this.

A million people will give you a million different ideas as to what causes it, and they are probably all partially right (in that there are probably a lot of possible causes and any one baby will probably be affected by at least three different factors at the same time, lol).

You might like to read The Happiest Baby On The Block. Similar advice to what you've been getting, but more of it and in more detail.

I second this.

YouTube has a lot of videos showing settling techniques. Happiest baby on the block is found there too if you search.

What you experience is called the arsenic hours I think. Or evening fussiness. They will outgrow it but meanwhile it's tough having baby crying without knowing what causes it...just try to prepare for those few hours daily, put everything else aside and just be with baby. Do you bf? Nursing may help. It helps if my bub is upset and I have no other ways of calming him down.

Some pp think its due to wind (colic) or reflux.

Hope it gets better soon.

I have a four week old. Doesn't cry so much yet in evenings but seems to get uncomfortable with wind/bringing up small amount bf. I find bf ing always settles him but wondered if it may be causing more pain etc?

No I don't think the bfing is causing more pain, it's just the unsettled period that is usual for young babies.
It sounds like you are being a responsive parent to your young baby and that sounds great to me.
The link below has lots of information on infant crying and there is a link at the bottom of the page to a website called purple crying which gives very comprehensive information about normal baby behaviour and possible options when responding to it.

All the best.
