I have a feeling my 11 month old needs to drop to one sleep. She usually wakes around 7, is tired by 9:30 and goes down without much issue, usually sleeping for 1hr 20mins. She used to have her second sleep at 2:30 but now she is fighting this sleep more and more.
I have tried her one one sleep a few times because she got up later than normal but by 10:30 she is really tired and I tried getting lunch into her around 11:30 and she lost the plot.
Any advice on what her 'routine' should look like with one sleep (when she should be eating etc).
My nearly 8 month is doing this, only just got her to sleep now after waking at 7am. I have found the last week her afternoon one was getting harder to manage so progressively was putting her morning one back & hopefully this one is a good couple of hours. I am trying to get breakfast and an early lunch into her with sleep from 12:30'ish until 3'ish. She then goes to bed 6/6:30 and does her 12 hours.
I'd try being a bit more gradual with the later nap time.
If its 9:30 now, can you try 10 for a week, then 10:30 for a week then 11 am for a week and see where that leads you.
My LO went to 1 nap around that age. Don't be afraid to do a big breakfast, decent morning tea, milk sleep then lunch. Even at 2 my son will often eat his best midday meal after he wakes from his nap. It's ok to have "lunch" at 2pm if that's when she happens to wake.
If also do an early evening bath and be prepared for an earlier night time. I'm not sure what time you're currently doing dinner and bed but you may need to bring it forward a bit so she's awake enough to eat and not overtired come evening.
DS dropped his afternoon sleep around 12 months. For the first week or so he was still going down for his morning sleep around 9.30, but gradually it stretched out to about 10.30 and he generally sleeps for 1-1.5 hours. Ideally I'd prefer him to have an early lunch around 11/11.30 then his sleep, but the only time that has worked is when he's fallen asleep after his morning BF and started the day at 8am instead of 6.30.
I figure he'll eventually stretch it out, and for now we just plan to be home in the mornings (apart from swimming lessons) and the afternoons are free for whatever. He tends to get a bit crabby between 4 and 5, but we just do something quiet like read or watch Sesame Street, or if I'm desperate we go for a drive. DH gets home around 5 so he gets a little second wind when he sees him, then we start the dinner/bath/bed routine around 5.30.
When DD2 did this I started off with a 10:30am sleep for 1.5 hours. So awake for lunch etc. I had to kind of do two smaller lunches as she had to eat before sleeping and when she woke up. In the afternoon I would go for a pram walk so she could rest or have a catnap. I found the evenings hard. She was asleep by 6 or 7. Every few days she went back to her old 2 sleep routine. It was back and forth of a while

MrsBeeGee I'm interested to hear whether or not you got dd back to sleeping in the afternoon again or not, as my daughter's routine and this issue are identical to yours and I'm struggling with the crankiness in the afternoons now. Any assistance greatly appreciated :-)
DS started to drop to one sleep around that age. It was a hard time, because he was tired, but he didn't want to sleep in the afternoon. Around 12 months, he had a big morning nap, then a small cat nap, maybe 20 mins? either in the pram or car to recharge his batteries. By 13 months he had dropped the afternoon nap, but he began falling asleep later and later for his midday nap.
Re the lunches, he would have breakfast, a big morning tea, lunch after 1st sleep, then small afternoon tea and dinner after the 2nd nap - if he had one. I could never do lunch before the nap because he was too tired, so I let him graze in the morning or have a 'mini' lunch before the second, later, 'proper' lunch.
I dropped dd down to one nap at 11 months but it was because she got harder and harder to put down for a morning nap, opposite of your situation. So dd coped pretty well because she was used to going down for an early afternoon nap and yes she did get pretty stroppy in the late afternoon and evening, we both got used to it. As pp has said, perhaps wait a bit until she is going down for her nap a bit later? All the best.
