We have a small house and our new babies room is next to my 18month olds. When the newborn wakes he screams straight away (not giving me a chance to go to him before he cries) . I'm scared that it is going to wake my toddler all night and I'll have two babies to try and settle! Can anyone give me some inspiration?!!

I was in the same situation- DD (2) is an atrocious sleeper, and her little brother was to have the room next to her.

For the first 3 months, I had DS in a bassinet in my room. DH slept with ear plugs and a eye mask thingy. Once I had DS in a semblance of a sleeping routine, I moved him into the room next to DD.

He has been in it for 2 weeks now. I have a good baby monitor that allows me to hear him before he gets too worked up (and wakes DD), and I find I'm going to him about 2-3 times a night. He is nearly 4 months old now, so has a 'sort of' predictable routine.

Would it be possible for you to have the new baby in with you until you have established a feeding pattern, and then move them into their own room?

Thanks for the great advice.. I do have him in our room ATM but he is a big baby and has put grown his basinet! ;( I want to also wait until he is in a better sleeping routine so it's more predictable!

I had my new babies sleep in the same room as my toddlers, and they were never woken when the the newborn cried. Maybe I was lucky, but they just slept through it original.gif

DS has been in his room next to DD for almost a week now. I was worried how it would go but it has been fine so far. DS only wakes once a night though and DD is a heavy sleeper.
When we first brought DS home we had some sleeping issues with DD where she was getting up a few times a night. That was DHs job, to put her back to bed. If you're toddler wakes can you just get DH to deal with it?
Otherwise could you put white noise or a radio playing softly in the toddlers room so it could drown out the baby waking.

I had the cots just far enough apart that the toddler couldn't touch the baby. They were always in the same room. It was never a problem.

the first night home from hospital, each time dd2 cried the others would wake, apart from dh who didn't hear a thing a left me to deal with all three rolleyes.gif . it got better and a few nights later the older two didn't wake, or I should say didn't wake when dd2 woke, they would time their bad dreams or toilet trips for when I would have just fallen back to sleep, meaning I would be up about 7 times a night. thankfully that is behind us now and I usually only have to get up once, maybe twice a night
