Hi Guys!

Just wanting to know.. when's too early to start buying things for your baby? My husband and I have fallen in love with a pram, cot, bassinet, etc already and these are on the more expensive side of the spectrum. Is it okay to start putting things on layby this early (I'm only 7 weeks.. I look 4 months already though! hehe ), and use the last few months of the pregnancy to save for while I'm on Mat leave?

I've just been made to feel silly every time I've gone into baby stores when they ask how far I am!! I'm an organiser and a planner and like to have everything sorted early so there's no stress.. now I'm stressing about being too early to buy things!! HELP!

Not from your due in group, but I would say yes.

I too am an organiser but having these items if something went astray with your pregnancy would be a difficult reminder.

I would put aside the $$$ you would be putting to the layby for the next 5 weeks and after your 12 week scan go an put them all on layby! Use the money that you save as a deposit.

That's so lovely! I wish my hubby was as handy hehe

With all the boxing day sales, we'd be saving over $1,000 by putting things on layby now.. and just wait to buy the gender specific things. I keep hearing from people that it will jinx the pregnancy and that's too hard to hear (why do people put these things in pregnant women's heads??! Seriously!).

I'm a crazy organiser, so I wouldn't expect anything less from me to have most big things before 5 months. I had our wedding paid off 6 months before the big day!!

not from your dig but i would just put the money aside as the warranty starts from when you purchase it so no use having a pram or whatever sitting there for 6/7 mths under warranty but not being used

I bought a portacot at around 7 weeks. It was marked down to $40 so couldn't resist it. I also grabbed a stroller when it was half price and I was 11 weeks I believe. Only thing I would suggest is try and do a long layby or not layby yet. If you run into issues with it (like I did the stroller) you will have wasted half of your warranty with the product sitting in a box or in bubs room. I only had a few days up my sleeve when my stroller broke, had it have happened a few days later I would have had nothing to fall back on.

Maybe keep the products boxed until you know for sure bub is healthy and that way you can return them if the worst happens

I'm a planner too but I wouldn't buy them yet, just because of the warranty issues. Also, I don't know where you are shopping but most baby stores/department stores have sales on baby items fairly regularly. I bought my DS's bed set when it was on sale, a great savings but then I realised they had these sales every three months or so.
Must say, I'm impressed you know what pram you want already, that was my biggest research product the months before giving birth!
Also, I don't think it's going to jinx anything so if you want to buy it go for it, you're not hurting anybody!

Thanks bikingbubs I wouldn't have thought about the warranty!
chloemay I think do whatever makes you happy and don't listen to others if what they're saying doesn't work for you I know I'll buy little bits and pieces over the coming weeks. If the worst happens and I miscarry, I'll have them for my next successful pregnancy - I know I'll keep trying until I get there. Have fun shopping!

We bought almost everything long before DS was even conceived. In fact, I think I bought 3 boxes of nappies in total after he was born - the rest we'd already stocked up on. We are still used the cot, pram and car seat for DD without any issues.

I'm a planner too - though I didn't plan on taking so long to have our children, all our pre-baby shopping worked out fine.

I have a Boori Forever 4 in 1 cot, which was the double bed in our spare room for at least 2 years before we conceived our DD. I also have the matching side table, blanket box, dresser etc - they look lovely in her room now, she will be 5 in March, so we've had the bed a good 8 years, it's her forever bed.

I had her pram & car seats on layby at around about 5 months pregnant (got a great package deal and saved $$) and had everything delivered around 7 months so it was ready and waiting.

Clothes, linen etc yep - bought it all. I can't think of anything that had a warranty? So that wasn't an issue for us.
