We're on holiday at the moment and my online purchase arrived a lot earlier than expected. I saw on the Australian Post website that it was already delivered on the 28th. We are not going to be back home for another week and half.

We live in a unit and we always get a card telling us where to pick up the parcel. It says I need to pick up within 5 days if I remember correctly? Obviously am not able to pick it up before then and I can't arrange or anybody else to get it either. What happens if the recipient can't pick up a parcel - does it get shipped back or do they hold onto it for a bit longer in case?

Could you get them to send it to a post office where you are holidaying?

You can call Australia post and they can hold it for you until you get home.

I think they send a reminder if not collected in 5 days, which gives another 5 days to collect before they send it back. I had a registered post to collect a while back, but never received the first card, it was about a month before we got the reminder card. The Australia Post staff at the shop told me that they'd been busy, so kept the mail longer than usual.

On the safe side, you can always ring your local post office to make arrangement to pick up at a later date.

We get the cards to our PO Box. They do say that they will only hold on to it for a limited time. And then send it back to the sender.

Could you call the local Post Office directly and let them know you are away? Is there no one you could get to pick it up if they allow it over the phone?

My AUST Post send a couple reminders then actually call me (happened once). I not collected the parcel is sent back to sender. Definately notify your local PO and they can hold it for you no problems

Did you put a hold on your mail? They will just hold it with the rest if you did. Otherwise I would call them and get them to keep it for you.

The jerks at my sister's PO sent it back after a week - no reminder. It was a package from Hong Kong too, so double jerks. Get in contact with them OP and tell them to hold it.

and apparently AP don't hold parcels when you put a hold on your mail - that's what my PO told me when i put a hold on, ridiculous
Also good luck with actually getting your post offices number, you will probably only find the 13 one

really? i put a hold on my mail earlier in the year and they held parcels too. But it was up to the parcel contractor to be aware of it and hold them (she had a list with parcels to be held, i was apologised to as she had tried to deliver parcels before the hold notice had been issued)
