We're looking to upgrade our Queen bed for a King, but have always had a slat bed base with a mattress as it seems more economical to only replace the mattress when required (our current bed has lasted us well over 12 years). For those who have an ensemble what are the benefits, and how often do you replace the base, is it whenever you replace the mattress?

Thanks for your help.

Rather inclined to giggle. Doesn't put things away.
There's no real advantage to an ensemble that I can see. Most modern ensembles are essentially just a slat bed base anyway (ie. there's no springs or anything in them). I like being able to get under a bed to vacuum, plus I think 'real beds' look nicer, and as you say, don't need replacing when it's time to upgrade your mattress.

I prefer slat base.

If your room is small then the gap underneath makes the room look larger IMO.

Ensembles have no sharp edges so if you fall on it you won't get hurt Tounge1.gif

Ensembles are just a lot cheaper than a nice bed. I have one because I couldn't find a bed I liked within my (then) price range and I preferred to spend less on an ensemble than on an ugly bed and have more to spend on a decent bed later.

I'd prefer a bed, and will upgrade at some point in the near future.

We used to have an ensemble with drawers underneath it was the best move we made as there was no built in wardrobe/linen closet

Slats are better because then you can store sh*t under the bed. No difference in comfort and cheaper. I've always gone for a cheap as bed, and good mattress. Actually, I've often just slept on a mattress on the floor, although not since being with DP who was horrified by it.

Hand over the chocolate and no one gets hurt
Funny, I find it much more comfortable sleeping on an ensemble than a slat bed. Ours (an ensemble) has drawers in the base, which is really handy. I've only ever replaced the top mattress, we've kept the base with the drawers. And we've recently replaced the bedhead and side tables, so I think it looks like a 'real' bed lol. We wouldn't go back to a slat bed.
