I will be induced around 39 wks due to GD and high BP (29 wks atm).
I was just wondering what other peoples experience with ARM induction only has been? Was it successful? Did you need the drip? Difference in labour to natural labour? Length? They are going to start S&S around 37-38 wks to see if my body will just go naturally but i usually go over due and the 2 i had with my last baby didn't work. Im just really hoping to avoid the drip as ill need a million other needles anyway. |

I had just ARM with DS. I also had GD, but I was 41 weeks at the time and 3-4cm dilated when the OB did the S&S two days prior.
The labour was similar to my previous one, was established in just over an hour and then lasted 20 minutes. The previous one was spontaneous, (4 days early, less than 4 hours from first twinge to baby, about 40-60 minutes in established labour. I think if you are super ripe and multigravida like I was it would be likely to work. Good luck! This post has been edited by howdo: 29/12/2012, 01:38 PM |

I was induced only with ARM with DD. I was 42 weeks exactly. The doctor did want to start syntocin almost immediately, but I convinced him to give me a few hours. In the end it wasn't necessary. Labour was short (~7 hours, slightly less than 4 in "established" labour), and got intense pretty fast. Overall, it was a very good experience.

Yes for for my last baby, was 39 weeks, turned out I was 6 cm already, I'd had no contractions, waters broken and baby arrived 50 minutes later. I have fast labours anyways but was glad I was at the hospital lol

I did with number 2, broke my waters at 37w6d and labour started about an hour or so later. I was already about 2-3cms at the time.
It felt like normal labour to me but my first was induced with the drip as my waters broke early but labour never started. My whole labour was 4 hours, my first was 8. |

Numbers 2 and 3 were ARM with a small amount of syntocinon and numbers 4 and 5 were ARM only. Very successful with no pain relief needed. I was 39 weeks but my cervix was ripe and ready.

If it's your first baby, it's highly unlikely you will labour with just an ARM - let alone if you are dilated in the first place. You will probably need a couple of doses of Prostaglandin gel just to soften your cervix.
If it's your second or third baby etc then you are more likely to labour as long as your cervix is ready and ripe (partially dilated and already effaced and soft/stretchy). |

I had a successful ARM labour with DS. I was 2cm dilated for a week or two before ARM at 39+4. I began contractions within 10 mins and DS was born 4 hours later.

My ARM labour with DD was AMAZING. I was 39+6, ready to go and after my OB broke my waters labour started on its own (with some nipple rolling to get it going) and lasted a very fast 1 hour and 20 mins before DD arrived, drug free.
My first was similar, although my waters broke naturally at 37+3 and labour started about 5 hours later, lasted 3 hours and DS arrived (just a shot of pethidine as pain relief). The second labour with ARM was very tolerable and easy to manage, only got painful during transition but everything was easier than my first. I'll probably have an induction again this time and would hope for exactly the same experience - couldn't have asked for a better labour. |
