Can someone please explain to me exactly what an unfavourable cervix is and what it means for a woman in late pregnancy? Thanks

It means that the cervix is high and hard and closed as opposed to soft and starting to open. It means that the cervix will be unlikely to respond if the woman is induced. So if induction is necessary they will need to use medication to try and make the cervix soft and start to open. It will make an induction more likely to succeed. It may also mean that they will not do an induction for social reasons.

Thank you! I assumed that was what it meant but no-one had ever explained it to me.
Another question - can an unfavourable cervix become favourable on its own in a short period of time? |

Not sure of the answer, but try googling 'Bishops score' I think it might be what you're interested in, as it talks about readiness for labour.

Another question - can an unfavourable cervix become favourable on its own in a short period of time? definitely! Many women have been told that they have an unfavorable cervix only to go into labour merely hours later. This post has been edited by Oma Desala: 29/12/2012, 06:03 PM |

Unfavourable cervix means its high and not soft e.g not ready for labour. It can change quickly. I had an unfavourable cervix with DD1 and my waters broke 2 days later.
I was induced with DD2 with an unfavourable cervix at 39 weeks and had two lots of gel. Labour kicked off eventually |

Just wondering, can you have the gel and it not work, and then that's that? ie. you won't be forced to continue the labour etc like if you had your waters broken?

Definitely there can be a failed gel induction. Sometimes it is impossible to rupture membranes on someone with an unfavourable cervix and syntocinon may be needed for some time to see if this will soften and open the cervix enough to get to the membranes. |

Unfavourable cervix - who comes up with these terms?
Your cervix is perfect! It will dialate in its own good time. |

QUOTE Unfavourable cervix - who comes up with these terms? It's a fair enough term. The cervix is unfavourable now in order to either induce or give birth. Your cervix is perfect! It will dialate in its own good time. Yes it probably is perfect and will dilate in it's own time but there are good medical reasons to induce a labour. The inductions I have a bit of a problem with are the postdates ones where the woman is only 2-3 over her due date. |
