I've decided to win one (or more) of the large lotto type jackpots over the new year period.

When I win I shall build a new home. I want this home to be brilliant. It must have everything I want and need and yet it must not be a huge gold plated monstrosity. So I've decided to throw it open to EB for suggestions so I don't miss anything important in the planning stage.

Questions:

1. If you could add something out of the ordinary to your home what would it be? Think libaray with ladder, wall of fish tanks, squash court, etc

2. What special items or rooms would be must haves in your dream home?

3. Would you build a standard looking house or would you go for something a bit out there, or really out there? What would it be?

Cape Cod/Hamptons Style - not out there, but timeless
Amazing views from living areas, study and master bedroom
Orchard/Vegie Patch
Walk in pantry with a sink in it
Formal dining room with seating for my extended family
Music room with a grand piano - could also double as the library.
Rumpus room
Small room for treadmill/pilates equipment
Fireplaces/Air con
Self cleaning pool
Seperate guest area
An ensuite with a big, luxurious bath just for me
Seperate counselling space for me to see clients - preferably with a view.

Might not be achieveable in this lifetime so may just continue renovating what I have!

I truly believe you need an Architect!

My parents have a small 3 bedroom architect designed house (no kids at home) and it is just beautiful and so functional. Every bit of space is well used, it flows well, it has amazing views from every room and it just totally suits their stage in life and style. It has an internal shed that dad keeps his boat in.

Compared to the hideous 5 bedroom plus study plus theatre room monstrosity the PIL live in. Some off the plan, huge totally inappropriate and unnecessary waste of space designed entirely by a builder!

I know if I ever got the opportunity to build my dream house than an architect would be my starting point.

A secret room. Ideal for when you need solitude.

A separate level for the kids so their crap stays out of my space.

An undercover coutyard with over looking balconies.

The house should over look a large lake and be close to city amenities.

1. Our dream house will have a secret underground passageway connecting our house to the guest house (future home of my parents when they get older). The underground passageway will run along the edge of the pool, which will have portholes so swimmers can see into the passage, and people can see into the pool.

2. I would like a huge bathroom with a claw-foot bath and black and white floor tiles. And everyone has to have their own toilet - I am fed up with boys who can't aim!

3. I like fairly traditional-looking houses - federation colours with bullnose verandahs, that sort of thing.
