I had to send some share statement to my account for him to complete my tax return, so i had to scan them and attach to an email, i was unsure of his email address, so Dh had a look for me and managed to, well what he thought was his email address, so he sent the email. Then realised that he'd sent it to the wrong accountant, it actually went to an accountant in a different state! I cant beleive it, i feel terrible right now. I have sent an email to the other accountant explaining and apologising that it was sent wrongly and can you please delete it.

Do you think i've done the right thing, i feel terrible that private information has been sent to the wrong person.

don't feel bad...it happens! I work in an accountants office and you would be surprised to know the amount of personal information that I incorrectly receive. I find it easier to have the person send you an email requesting the info so that you can then directly respond to their email and attach the documents. Better to be safe than sorry original.gif

Me too!! wink.gif

OP I wouldnt worry - I recently had someone send me something in a work email that they shouldn't have - it disclosed quite sensitive information, but I felt for them & deleted it & then replied to them that I had deleted it so they didn't feel as bad.

Thankyou for replying, its not a nice feeling to know that youve sent an email to the wrong professional person. It was a little confusing as it appears that there are two accountant in Aus. with the same name, and its not the kind of name that youd think that. It just shows you got to be careful.

Ive sent an email saying that the email sent was by mistake and could you kindly ignore and delete it.

sanity is over-rated
i have a name very close to another person at my work, i am a lowly grunt, she is high up, same first name, close last name...

i get emails for her probably once every 2-3 mths, sometimes from people quite high up as well... i just send back a polite email saying "i think this is for XXX not me, i have deleted it from my inbox"

You have done the right thing op, I'm sure it will be fine.

Accountants are required to keep things like that confidential. We see so many of them we really don't take that much notice.
