Yesterday I braved the long drive and awful Christmas shopping hordes to go to Target. I didn't want to, but really needed to get a new car seat, and only Target had one in stock (BTW, thanks to all the EB advice about what car seat to get - I got the Safe and Sound one, but a Trojan).

So I'm standing in Target, with DS (3 months) in a Baby Bjorn, struggling to get this car seat balanced on a trolley, when I'm approached by a sales person for a well known child portrait chain. She spies me, and starts her (probably well rehearsed) spiel.

Her: Hello! Oh what a gorgeous baby! A boy?

Me: Thankyou. Yep, a boy, 3 months old.

Her: He is adorable! And so big! Now, we are giving out free entry into a competition to win a family portrait, with X photo store, which is operating within Target.

Me: No thanks, I really don't like photos (I don't, honestly EB).

Her: Oh! REALLY?

Me: Yep, just don't like them. Thanks though.

And now it turns weird...

Her: Did you have a bad experience?

Me: (Thinking she means photo store portraits) No, I just don't like photos altogether.

Her: No, I mean, like a bad experience in childhood?

Me: Huh?

Her: (moving closer to me) Did something happen to you?

Me: Um.....No.... (looking around wildly, thinking 'How can I get out of here?!')

Her: Did your parents take photos of you?

Me: (playing it safe) No, my family is not into photos either.

Her: (moving even closer to me) So is there some sort of trauma or something?

Me: NO! Thanks for the offer, but I have to go!


And I ran, as fast as a woman pushing a trolley with a car seat on top, lugging an enormous boofa of a baby, can run. Which is not fast, but was fast enough.

So....Odd much??!!!

'Tis the season.......

I've learnt to avoid one particular checkout operator in Coles because she just talks about the strangest things. And she doesn't shut up. I'm hoping she's just a Christmas temp.

How strange. I wonder how she thought it was going to end?

"Oh yes, I did have a traumatic experience in childhood, thank you for being so perceptive. I'll take the most expensive option you have!"

Weird.

But the one that came up to us the other day didn't do much for sales either. I was with my 19yr old and 11mth old, when she walked up to us. She kept talking to my 19yr old but getting annoyed when I answered.

I finally realised she thought I was the Grandmother and pls refer queries to me. Instead of leaving it there, she added "so it's been a long time between photos?" But after I responded "no, its been 6 mths".

I feel there is to many assumptions being made.

There is a supermarket checkout person that cracks me up each time i see him; he tells me how he is an anarchist and cynic and i am thinking, you work for a big corporation, i am not sure telling customers you don't believe in your employer is the right thing to do or asking cutomers about their philosophical beliefs. Last time he asked me if i was a cynic i said as a mother now i was beyond cynicism.

If i had been asked those questions i could have thought of some great replies.
