We have a self contained compost bin - no contact with the ground.
I'm putting my veggie scraps in it as we go, but it needs more ’brown' content - like dried grass clippings. We don't have a a garden or lawn yet. What else can I add to make a good compost mix? |

Don't put the egg shells in there - the little buggers turn up all over my veggie garden!
Coffee grounds, leaves... Don't stress it's compost not a souffle! |

Egg shells are great, they do transfer into the garden when you use the compost but they are great for making things ubcomfortable for snails and slugs, and I find they leave my strawberries alone

We added some horse manure. We were able to pick some up for $2/bag from a house nearby.
Also, we bought some worms on the Internet and added them (we didn't have any/many in our garden). Otherwise, we just add the usual kitchen and garden scraps. |

If you do add worms - you need to put in composting worms - not your average garden worm. And dont do it if its somewhere thats going to get really hot (eg a black plasgtic container in the sun) - you will get cooked worms.

Apparently, if you roast the eggshells for about 10 minutes, the break down quicker in the compost.
Also, you can add things like human hair and dryer lint. Plus, vacuum dust. Cut flowers that have died. I think the general rule is if comes from the earth, you can add it. http://www.compostinstructions.com/what-yo...cannot-compost/ If you want to add meat scraps and dairy, look into bokashi. |

I can't add worms - it's a tumbler com poster, so no contact with the ground. And it would get very hot, it's a black container.
