I just had my morph follow up with the Ob. Our bub is head down today and the Ob was a bit concerned she could feel his head when she did an internal.
She checked my cervix which she said was long & closed, and booked me in for another scan to check cervical length on 28 Dec. I think it's more that the bub's head is down that she is worried about. She has told me to rest in the meantime, not so easy at Christmas with guests coming... Any experience with this??? Thanks in advance! quick edit - der I am 19 weeks... Do you have a history of early labours, was there a shortened cervix on a previous ultrasound?
If not, and this is just a run of the mill normal pregnancy, then that is a really weird reaction by your OB. A baby at 20 weeks is very mobile and is likely to have changed position as soon as you walked out of the OB's office. It is totally normal to have a head down baby at a check at 20 weeks. I'm surprised that would have prompted the OB to do an examination as well- if she was genuinely concerned over possible preterm labour and wanted to see the cervix, a speculum should have been used- it's much safer than a digital examination (less risk of infection). Obviously your OB had some worry by the head down position, but without further information it seems an odd reaction. |

It's my first pregnancy and I haven't had any problems. The morph ultrasound showed my cervix at 4.5 cm, and closed. She did use a speculum to have a look and then did a manual check as well.

Not sure why your OB was worried but I don't think it would be because the baby is head down. This baby was breech when I saw my OB at around 21 weeks, then head down at around 25 weeks. Baby's at this point are consistently moving.
Maybe something else had her worried? I never had an internal exam while pregnant with DS, and won't need one this time until later (after 38weeks) which I've discussed with my OB. |

No experience Bright, just letting you know I'm thinking of you.
I'm sure it'll all be fine and the Dr is just being especially careful |

I've never heard of an OB who would do an invasive internal exam (and both speculum AND fingers?????) when your scan results show quite clearly that your cervix is long and closed in an otherwise healthy pregnancy. At 19 weeks your baby can be any position they like really. I'm just shaking my head here.

OK thanks everyone. I will try to take it a bit easier just in case she did have reason to be concerned about my cervix, but will try not to get too worked up about it.

Like =R2= I think that is just bizarre. A 19 week foetus can be head down, it can be sideways, upside down and using your uterus to bounce off. If you had your scan again right now the chances are that your baby will be in a completely different position. Please do not be concerned but I would ask your doctor next time you see her why did she see fit to do not only a manual but speculum exam when there was no apparent clinical reason to do so. She didn't mention anything else OP? |
