I know what the response will probably be but I thought id post anyway. What do you think a shop should do in regards to matching their sale prices? I know the big chains will match an item that you have on layby if they have it on sale and I have done thise before, say at Big W or Kmart.

I bought a large piece of furniture and paid for it. It was a six week delivery and I picked it up today. I think my main mistake was paying for it as I did have the option of not paying at the time. It was on sale, and also a further 5% off the sale price.

I asked the girl could she match the sale price, the answer was no with a laugh!! Rude. I said that was unfair but reluctantly picked it up anyway. I am a bit annoyed that I didn't say no and just return it, I mean I could just re buy it at the lower price so I find it a bit rude that they won't match it. Oh well, lesson learned. The main reason I didn't ask is because I am not familiar with the store and although they are a large chain I felt like it might be a pain if they refused and wanted to argue. Even the guy at the pick up said that I should have cancelled the sale. Something makes me think they would have just refused to refund me.

I would write them a letter, very similiar to what you have posted and they may refund you that 5%. Most chains know that if you are unhappy you will tell lots of people.

eg:

1st para - Very happy with the quality of our table.......

2nd - BUT very unhappy with......

3rd - Have always had great service previously from you and would hate this to ruin it.

I think it was a bit unprofessional of the sales lady to laugh at you, but shops aren't obliged to price match items in this way.

You entered into a contract with them, at an agreed price, so you should honour that agreement.

I guess it doesn't hurt to ask if they could discount to the current price, but I wouldn't be upset or return the item if they refused, because you accepted the terms.


I used to work for a place that would get phone calls 12 months after a sale was made - with customers asking us to credit their account because the product was now advertised on sale and was much cheaper. The customer had used the product for 12 months, and although we were polite to them on the phone, we'd laugh at their ridiculous request after we'd hung up.

We also had customers trying to return a product 12 months later for a refund.
