Growing up, lunch at my grandparents house was always proceeded by nuts and dried fruit as nibbles - macadamias, cashews, vienna almonds, and then apricots, figs, pineapple, etc. Sometimes also my mum's homemade almond bread.

In fact we still have these sorts of things for our family Christmas lunches.

On our table for the whole day:

* Lots of stone fruit (plums, cherries, apricots, nectarines, etc).
* Sugar coated peanuts made by my Grandma
* Sugared almonds made by me (totally different recipe to the above, but just as yummy - and not the sort you have at weddings)
* Choc coated nuts and fruit
* Rum balls made by my Mum
* Punch made by my Mum

In the afternoon we bring out the dips, chips, cheese and crackers.

My MIL normally makes a heap of truffles - coconut ice, peanut butter balls, mini puddings, rum balls, etc etc, as well as choc coated almonds, and some peanuts but this year she has pneumonia, so I am going to ring her today and tell her I will be doing that so she can get off her feet, but I will only be doing three or four...

That's it though. There is normally so much food that no one wants to eat before hand...

we are having some older & elderly family friends over for morning tea/nibbles before lunch. I asked DH to buy stuff the other day for it, he came back with 6 variations on crackers to have with dip, but no dip, some cheezels, corn chips and chocolate covered fruit & nuts. rolleyes.gif

I am going to do some smoke salmon on pikelets or crackers, crackers & dip, maybe some cheese, the chips and fruit & nuts. Mil will also bring some fruit cake & I am assuming that she will make white christmas like she usually does or I will make some. I might leave some candy canes out for the kids but I dont want them to eat too much before lunch, I also dont want a million candy canes left over.
