I have a Panasonic DVD recorder that cost me $600 (or thereabouts) 3 years ago.
The DVD side of it works but the DVD recording side of it no longer works. It is no longer in warranty. In your opinion would it be worth getting it repaired? Or are DVD players/recorders viewed as disposal nowdays? |

Hmmm, I wouldn't bother unless I had a sentimental attachment to it. DVD player/recorders are so cheap now to buy new.

Nope, I suspect you could buy a new one for less than the repair would cost, especially if it needs parts.

Alas it will probably cost you more to repair than replace.

It's true it probably is cheaper or about the same to replace.
However I can't stand our throw-away society so I tend to repair my stuff. I know I'm probably fighting a losing battle, but ethically it's important to me. So, we recently repaired our PVR at only slightly less than buying a new one. I think there are advantages to repairs. You know the machine, you've replaced probably one of only a couple of parts that can break, and you're not adding to land fill. New machine could just as easily break or give you trouble one month out of warranty. The bummer is you have to pay a bit just to find out what is wrong - I think our's was somewhere around $60, maybe $80? Which was taken out of the repair cost, but will lose it if you don't go ahead. If you describe the problem they can usually give you a rough idea of cost. |

Buy a new one - we have a blue-ray player & recorder & it cost us a lot less than $600.

*sigh*
Yeah, thought as much. Lesson learnt that I should have taken out the extended warranty I have some sentimental footage on there that I taped off the news. It is of DH, does anyone know if there is a way to get that off?? |

My DH bought me a DVD/PVR when they first came out at a cost of nearly $800
The stupid thing only worked for 2 years and then packed it in. I was about to throw it out when DH said he thought he took out extended warranty. I had a look and it was covered for 4 years. It works perfectly now, but I wouldn't have paid to have it fixed because the technology is so much more advanced and cheaper now. You should be able to record your shows onto a DVD. That's what I did with mine. Took hours to record something over to a DVD but it did it eventually! |
