Hi,
Does anyone have or had this type of sewing machine before and can point out which stitch that does the same sort of job as an overlocker stitch?! Ive had this machine for a while and ive dusted it off in the hope of being able to make some clothing for my boys but i need the clothing to hold through a few wears at least! My mother normally uses just the zig zag stitch but after washing the clothing she makes the boys they tend to start fraying around inside. Ive read about the French seam and watched the demo on youtube but is there any other seams I could use? any help would be appreciated Thanks!! |

I don't have this machine, but probably you can either do a blind hem (depending on where you want the finished seam - hems most obviously) or there also should be an overedge stitch. I have a very old Singer (about 30 years old) and even it has an overedge stitch, and I also have a 20 year old Janone, which has both a blind hem capacity and also an overedge stitch. So for sure a newer janome should be able to do either of these.
Or you could just sew the seam as per usual, then overcast the edges with a zig zag. French seams are very easy (on a straight edge), and look nice, especially on shirts. It is worthwhile taking the time to do them on shirts and things like that IMO. ETÄ: An over edge stitch still won't be the same as an overlocked seam though (it looks kind of like a blanket stitch). If you have trouble with fabric fraying best to do a french seam. Or zig zag the edge, which is better than the overlocked stitch I think in regards to preventing fraying. Or pinking the edges might help. This post has been edited by SarahM72: 31/12/2012, 07:15 PM |
