I am attempting our first Gingerbread house tomorrow With the kids and their cousin's. it is to be erved on Christmas night but I don't know how to store it until then.
Also is it ok to use the icing with egg in it if not eating it the same day? This post has been edited by LJandAJ: 19/12/2012, 10:11 AM |

Get down to the $2 shop and buy a large air tight plastic container - if you can't get an airtight one then put some glad wrap between the lid and the top.
Otherwise wrap it in a plastic bag or some foil and store it in a spare eski. Couldn't say on the egg icing thing? What part of the egg? I've not heard of this recipe before! |

Last year I made the panels a couple of days before Christmas and stored them in containers. It was my first attempt and I found it was good just to do the panels on one day. I had just brought DS2 home from the SCN and DS1 was helping in his own special way so I needed a break. On Christmas Eve we assembled the house for Christmas day.
I will watch this thread for any tips and hints as my house looked like it didn't survive an earth wake. I think the royal icing is ok. |

Get a large air tight container to store it in, emphasis on the large. I usually bake my house the day before eating and assemble it on the day, this is mainly because I do stained glass windows in mine and if made too soon the windows have a tendency to run.
As to the royal icing, that stuff keeps very well and is still good months after making. There's a reason it's popular on wedding cakes. I wouldn't let a pregnant woman eat it though. |

We dont eat ours, it is purely for decoration. It sits around for a few days so no one is really keen to eat it.
I usually make some other gingerbread cookies at the same time to eat. |

Actually now I remember that last year we had one sitting on the bench loosely wrapped in cellophane being decorative for about 10 days before we destroyed and ate it on Christmas Night!
Was yummy! |
