What age were your kids when they started to read independently?

How independently? My six year old, who's just finishing FYOS, has just started reading large-print painfully simple chapter books (like Billie B Brown) very slowly for pleasure.

Yep, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about, cinnabubble. So, did this transition to reading happen in Grade 1?

She'll start year one next year, but it's only literally in the last couple if days that she's started doing it. I almost cried with happiness when she asked me to help her find the one suitable book we had and I raided the Christmas presents for the next one when she finished the first.

I can never get my head around the different years between states, which is why I'm asking for ages!

Sorry. I'm in NSW and her last day of kindergarten (prep, pre-primary, etc) is tomorrow.

Noah was 6 in August Kell and he's reached the level Cinnabubble described perhaps at the begining of term 4. He's just finished FYOS.
So if that's where C is reading she's what 2 years above her age but with her intelligence she will surpass that quickly now she is off and running. |

DD#2 is 6 (turned in October) has just finished FYOS - she reads small books, loves Dr Suess (the more simple repeating ones) and reads for pleasure.
DD#1 is 7 (turned in September) and has just finished grade one (second year of school) and she is reading Aussie Nibbles, and smaller style chapter books. She gives Road Dahl a go and also Enid Blyton books. I consider both of them to be relatively normal is reading ability. So to answer your question - reading for pleasure, just picking up a book and lying down and reading - somewhere between the end of FYOS and SecondYOS. Obviously depending on the child |

She's not quite there yet, Sue, but with the grade skip next year into Grade 1, I just wanted to see what level kids are likely to be at and how much catch up she'll need to do, and what age they normally start reading independently (simple books).

DD has read independently, for pleasure, since she was about 4 (small simple books)
She is 5 now and finishing Kinder (NSW) and reads Bindi Books, Aussie Nibbles and other small chapter books. Her reading however is above her age and this year her "reading" at school was done with the Year 1 classes. |
