Okay, I'm desperate to find out what it is, it's driving me batty!

For the last week or so, there has been a banging/tapping noise that has been happening at night/early morning. It's at the other end of our house so we only hear it on the baby monitors. It registers on both monitors (my sons door is always closed, the nursery is next to his with door always open).
I think it registers louder on my sons monitor, and it would have to be pretty loud to go halfway up the noise indicator as it does!
We have run out of ideas as to what the noise could be. It always sounds the same, and it always bangs about 4 times before stopping.

Can anyone shed any light on what it is PLEASE?

Do you have the dishwasher on?
I had that happen at my old place...would turn the dishwasher on before I went to bed and it would do a clunk as the water switched on and off...

or maybe the hot water system if you have it on a night tariff?

Could it be a possum getting in your roof? If it stays at the other end of the house you might not hear it in the roof but you might be hearing it getting it the same way each night.

We had a possum and it came in between 4-5am every morning...

My first thought was something to do with the water too. Ours makes a few noises as it's heating up but at my mums makes a terrible racket and sounds like quick succession of popping.

Possums don't tap- they stampede, lol. I live with them (brushtails that is). Unless of course they are sugar gliders or ring tails.

My guess would be a rat or mouse. We have had a bush rat living in our roof at times. They are quite cute native rats, not like the imports.

Could be wasps? The strange noises we were hearing in the ceiling at night turned out to be a nest of European wasps!
