I'm just about to buy a second car seat for DS (just turned 3 months), so that DH can do the afternoon Daycare pick-up.

DS is a large boy- he is 7.2 kg, and about 66 cm in length (95 percentile for height and weight), and appears top be growing consistently. As DH is 6'2", I can only imagine that DS will be a big lad.

He is currently in his sister's old Safe and Sound Compaq in my car, but I worry that he is not particularly safe and/or comfortable in it. Also we are in Far North Queensland, so lots of "padding" (of the non-essential kind) is not helpful as he gets very sweaty very quickly, and tends to start screaming (even with the air-con on).

Any recommendations for a big baby? I have seen lots of seemingly conflicting information about Mothers Choice, Safe and Sound, Infa Secure, Baby Love etc. I guess a convertible seat makes sense from a $ point of view, but I will happily pay for the best seat for comfort and safety.

I 'd personally go for the Safe n Sound Meridian Tilt & Adjust. They are a great seat, and rate really well in the CREP ratings. They also RF to 12kg, so you can keep bub rear facing for the recommended 12 months.

I would get the Infa Neon from Big W or its plusher version from baby shops

ETA - My 3 year olds are JUST over the line for RF in the Neon with the padding in - my 1 year old has heaps of room!

We have Babylove Grandes (they have changed since I got them...but the expensive one at Kmart). They can RF til 12kg and are tall as well. Being a big boy you would want a taller seat (this is one) if you have the room if your car while RFing.
I read a lot of the Mothers Choice are outgrown in the toddler years as they are short

We have a S-n-S Meridian too, I love that we can adjust the headrest without pulling the whole carseat out of the car. Another thing to consider OP is that regardless of his weight, your DS will need to be rear facing until he is 6 months old, so you will need a seat that can RF with heavier limits iykwim.

CREP results are out if date as they have not tested any 2010 standard seats with height markers.

I have the safe and sound meridian tilt and adjust wasn't cheap but I'm expecting it to last awhile. We bought it before bub was born. As DH is six foot seven we thought we might get a long baby- and we did! Bub is two months now and we've been happy with the seat so far.

In your situation I would not get the SNS Meridian AHR T&A as they are very plush and even if you reverse all the bits you can to the smooth rather than velour fabric they are still hot, we have one and are in Brissy so not as hot but it can still get pretty sticky.

I would reccomend:

Infa secure neon - nice high shoulder markers for RF and no excess padding, smooth fabric etc and affordable at about $150.00, tested to 15kg RF which will be handy for you if he is a big boy! The Infa Kompressor is a similar option, not sure if it is in stores yet though.


SNS Compaq (the new one) - this also has the high RF shoulder markers and has FF markers that are even higher than the neon, also has the easy adjust harness (don't have to take the seat out to change the height of the shoulder straps) it has slightly more padding than the neon I think but is not as plush as the Meridian, these are around $400.00 though. The SNS Lifestyle is a cheaper version of this without some of the ease of use features.

I third the Infa Secure Neon (or fancier models..) would be perfect for your growing lad. It will also keep him rear facing for ages. My 2yo is RFing in her one and loves it
