Hi All,

I am a sahm with a daughter who is 4 years old.

Just recently we have started to try to conceive again and were very lucky to fall pregnant the first month.

I am approximately 7-8weeks in and went for a dating scan today and just wanted to make sure that everything was ok.

We received the news that we are expecting twins and the person doing the scan said I was about 5w 4d in. Heartbeats were are 135bpm.

I have to be honest, I am very scared and teary of what the future hold and why the babies are measuring smaller that what I thought they would be (does this sometimes happen with twins?).

I am worried that this will be such a big change for my girl and I want it to be a positive one and that she doesn't get forgotten as I am so busy.

Any advice, similar experiences would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi purplepussycat. I don't have twins, but I did have my second child when my first was almost four. He was a pretty low maintenance child and while he remembers me crying with pain as I tried to breastfeed DS#2 (terrible attachment issues), in general he was happy to spend time with his toys and TV when I was busy and we still had stories, cuddles etc. DH is a very hands-on father and that definitely helps.

On the twins issue, my younger brothers are twins, born when I was three. I was surprised to learn that my mother worried that my older sister and I might have felt neglected after they were born - neither of us did.

Looking after twins is full on and chaotic, but I'm sure you will have many people come and tell you how they managed, and how much fun twins can be.

I don't know about scans and what appropriate sizes for twins in the early stages are (mum found out via an x-ray (!) at four months) but they certainly tend to be smaller at birth. My brothers were both close to 6lbs, so a healthy size for twins.

Feel free to pop over to Due In Aug 2013 group, there is another mumma on their expecting twins.

Dont forget scans this early it is so easy to mismeasure, they say the 20 week scans are much more accurate. Also you may have ovulated late. They work off average sizes. Lots and lots of factors to be considered. The fact they could see a good strong heartbeat is a good sign.
