Hi
Last Thursday at 2.30pm I had the 1hr gest blood test. The girl at work who recently had a bub said not to eat a few hours before cos she did, failed it and had to have the awful 3hr test. I researched beforehand and consensus was don't eat anything before ESP no sugar or carbs so I had grilled bacon and scrambled eggs at 8am and nothing else apart from Water til after they took blood at 230pm. So i Found out today i Failed got 8.8 which is high.
Obviously this was because my body needed food! My doc is useless and never gave me any advise.
So what happens now? I'm waiting for midwife to send me the diabetes team phone number to make the appt where she said ill have a special diet then the 3 hour look test.
Has anyone else been in m shoes? I'm white, aged 32, first bub, no diabetes in famil and eat healthily.
What happens next? Thanks

They'll get you to do the 2 hour test.. it's doesn't hurt, it's just a PITA sitting around. Take a book. You also need to have a high carb diet for some time before 2-3 days (IIRC). That was seriously annoying, I really had to struggle to eat the volume they wanted.

I had a high reading for the 1 hour and normal for the 2 hour. My OB said there is a high rate of false positives, but virtually no false negatives with the 1 hour one.

My Obstetrician doesn't bother with the 1 hour test as she says that it gives so many false positives, many people end up having to do the more accurate 3 hour GTT anyway. From that end, as hard as the 3 hour test is with the carb loading diet, time it takes and the full fasting beforehand - it's accurate so you may find you have nothing to worry about and 'pass' despite this initial failure.

Failed the first test 4 times, had to have the 3hr test each time - no diabetes.

It's not that big a deal, just take a book or your iphone or something to do.

I certainly think your result could have been affected by not eating for more than 6 hours!

I did the 1 hour glucose challenge test (GCT) at 28 weeks. Failed it miserably - result was 9.5! ...

My OB called me and advised me to do the 2 hour glucose tolerance test (GTT). I didn't have to do a special diet before (but I believe this comes from the pathology lab doing the test). Just rocked up to the pathology lab with my iPad and a few spare hours. They did a finger prick test to check my fasting levels weren't too high (some places do a urine sample instead). They take a fasting blood test, and then you drink the glucose drink again. Sit around and wait for an hour, take another blood test. Sit and wait another hour, take another test, then get food and water ASAP!

Unfortunately for me, I failed that one too (2 hour result 8.4) soI have GDM. I've seen a dietician and diabetic educator and am on a low GI diet with 4 x daily finger prick BGL tests. I'm not even a week into it yet, so don't know how it will be long term (as long term as 9 more weeks can be as I'm 31 weeks now!), but really hoping we can keep it controlled with diet.

For the record, I'm 28, slim, white, first pregnancy and no family history. So I am almost as low risk as you can get, but still, I have GDM. I also have only put on 6kg up to this point, but from what I've been told, diet irrelevant when it comes to hormones, and that's what causes GDM!

Try not to stress, get the GTT done soon so you can be reassured you don't have GDM, or get it managed if you do.

HTH
xoxo

I failed mine as well with a result of 7.8 last week, don't fret, its quite common to fail the 1 hour test and be totally fine. The same thing happened in my first pregnancy.

The next step is just doing the 2 hour test (which for me is this Thursday). Then if that one is failed you get referred to a diabetes educator and are diagnosed and it gets taken from there.

The 2 hour test is in the morning after fasting.

The 1 hour test is not a fasting test and can be done at any time of day.

Oh-I am worried about having mine in a few weeks! I didn't have it with DD but that was 8 years ago and I am 10kg heavier now blush.gif I am having the 1hr test and terrified I will fail and they will want me to do the 2 hr test-reason I'm terrified is because they can;t get blood from me for 1 test-let alone 3 in 1 day! Generally it takes 3-5 attempts to get a vein that will co-operate so if they do that for the first one there wont be any left for bloods 2 & 3! Hubby said they would put a cannula in-over my dead body!
