HI,

I need to buy a carrier for my ds. He is 10 weeks old and weighs 6.5kg already and is very tall (both DH and I are tall). I am currently using a sling but he is getting to long and a bit heavy to carry like that any more.

Has anyone used these items with thier LO?

Is the baby bjorn miricle hard to carrier a heavier child - my concern is that he is big already and is hard to hold with sling as weight is on one shoulder mainly with the sling. So is it hard to hold when they are 8-10 kg?

With Ergo my main question is do the kids like the side postion, and do you then lose the ability to use both hands in that postion? Second question on ergo is how old do they need to be to be carried on your back?

Hope EB can help me with this decision biggrin.gif

I never had a BB, but had something similar. IME they are only good in the short term. I stopped using it way before he turned 6 mths. I don't recall exactly when but it was useful when they are very young and light and then it just put too much strain on my shoulders/back. The Ergo however is fantastic and I never had any problems carrying a much older child - we used the Ergo for short trips with a 3 year old.

I didn't really use the side position so not sure about that one. I'm sure I used it on my back before one year. Once he could sit up comfortably I think, so maybe 9 mths?

I have a Manduca (similar to an ergo) and it is great. It puts the weight of the baby more onto your hips and I can carry my 8 month old DD who is about 10kgs for ages without it hurting. The Manduca also lets you cross the straps over your back so that you can make it even more comfortable when carrying heavy babies.

I used to have a BB (older style one) and it made my shoulders ache after about 30 minutes.

I only lasted 10 minutes before giving up on the BB. My shoulders were in a lot of pain. Our ergo is great, I can still carry my 4 year old on my back fairly easily. I did have to stop using the front carry with DS2 when he was 2 but that was because I threw my back out, not actually anything to do with the carrier. Never used the side carry, but the front and then back were fabulous. Still use the back occasionally when shopping with the 2.5 year old.

As PP I had/have a Manduca and a BB. I hated the BB. The crotch-dangling, neck hurting, BB didn't get used by me after I bought the Manduca. DH liked the BB, but also used the Manduca because it seemed to be more comfortable for DS.

Plus, back wearing is great for arms free activities!

BB shouldn't be bought for anyone, Manduca or ergo are both great carriers, I always preferred the Manduca because of te built in infant carrier over the bulky horrible ergo infant insert. Personal choice.

Train your dog, it's worth it!
A zillion years ago, we had an Ergo. We chose an Ergo because it put bub's weight onto your hips, rather than onto your shoulders and back. Hips are designed for carrying weight, backs are not as good at it. It meant that I could carry DD for hours at a time (used the front position) without getting tired or strained.

My friend who had a BB, tested our Ergo - and promptly went out and bought one for herself. It made a huge difference to how long (as in age and size of bub) that she could carry her child for.

Ergo ergo ergo. Better for you, better for baby. End of story. I love mine, DS is 18 months old, back for wandering about, front for snuggles and sleeping.
Best baby purchase hands down.

I'd advise ANYTHING that carries baby in a ergonomically hips supported position and the weight evenly on your hips.
