Hello, just keen to ask your advice about imessage.

Just before our baby was born early Nov, DH and I bought new phones. I got an iphone 5 and he an iphone 4s..or whatever it's called. Both phones are capable of imessage which I was under the impression allowed the user to text back an forth to other iphone users (those who have imessage activated) 'free' of charge. By free, I mean that it is sent via internet and not via sms, hence you use your data allowance to send the message as opposed to sms.

However...we received our teltra phone bill last week and every single imessage I have sent to him and vice versa, has been charged at their usual sms rate. So I am confused as to why we are being charged to send these imessages.

As far as I can tell, the phone is set up and all activated correctly. The messages being sent though via imessage appear in a blue bubble and those sent in sms are green. Can anyone help shed any light on this before I get on the phone for lord knows how long to telstra?

On the screen, do your messages to each other show up in blue or green? (Blue means they're going as iMessages, and green means they're going as text messages)

bees-knees, they are all in blue on mine and DH's phone apart from perhaps 2 or 3 messages which would not go through as iMessage and are green and it states beneath those messages that it has gone through as an SMS.

Since writing my OP I have gone through the bill and cross referenced it with my phone history on my mobile and I have been able to reconcile most of the calls. I was confused as most of this bill is for SMS's made from my old phone which were all SMS, I hadn't made allowanced for this..doh! However, it looks like all the MMS's have been charged for, and many of these were photo's I sent of the new baby to my husband while I was in hospital, so I am not sure why they are not included as iMessage!

Anyway, sorry to confuse thing further!! Thanks for your input anyway..

I think iMessage only works when you are connected to the Internet via wifi. So when either of you are connect via the 3G network they will be sent as sms's and mms's

iMessage doesn't include picture msgs these are charged as mms.

iMessage must be done via wifi or 3G. If you're saying it comes up in blue, indeed it should be going through the net, therefore 'free of charge'

Only other thing I can think of is go to the Genius Bar at apple to get it resolved. It could all just hinge on one thing. I think apple also does call support. Next byte should be helpful too.

I am with telstra and have always been charged and they told me that picture messages always get charged at MMS rates?!

Both with Telstra (only decent company in Tassie!). I think iMessage is similar to emailing things.. So it just goes through the Internet. But I even double checked our phone bills! And when we send an iMessage including a photo from the iPad to the iPhone, it works and doesn't cost! Our iPad is the stock basic one that doesn't have a SIM card, so even if it did cost, it wouldn't send! If that makes sense?
