My DH and I are in a stalemate on this: my absolute favourite girl's name (and the name that for years I've been saying that I would give any future daughter) is ESME.
My husband (and my parents, his parents and pretty much anybody over the age of 30) is horrified and say that the only thing they can think of is 'Esme Waston' from 'A Country Practice'. Of course, anybody younger than 30 thinks that I got the name from those damned 'Twilight' books, so no matter which way I turned, I'm cursed by popular culture as far as the adults are concerned. My logic is that a) once Potential Baby Girl is named, hopefully nobody will be heartless enough to keep complaining about her name and b) her peers will * definitely* be far too young to ever have heard of ACP or Twilight, so she won't get teased for that reason. So I need a neutral opinion. What does everyone think about 'Esme' as a girl's name? Am I dooming Potential Baby Girl to a lifetime of mockery, or will the adults get over it by the time they meet her? Should I take my husband's adamant hatred of the name into consideration? Compromise? Or just name my next cat Esme? Enquiring minds want to know!! |

I really like Esme. I grew up in the 'A Country Practice' era and it doesn't make me think of Esme Watson at all. Tell everyone you really like Twilight so now you want to call her 'Renesme,' the'll beg you to call her Esme

A friend named her baby daughter Esme a year ago. I must say that my first thought was not ACP or Twilight but Esme Squalor from Lemony Snicket.
However that has passed and I now think of it just as a pretty name for a beautiful girl. I say if you love the name just go for it. People will get used to it. I'm guessing that Twilight will not be an enduring cultural phenomenon, and anyone born after 1985 will have never heard of Esme from A Country Practice. |

I don't mind it. I don't think of Twilight because I've never seen it.
For something similar but a little different how about Elke? |

Also Esme Hoggett from Babe...
I don't like it but even if I did my answer would be the same - better to find a name you and your DH both agree on, even if it wouldn't be your first choice, than to waste a lot of energy trying to convince him to give in and use a name he hates. |

I'm not against the name, but I am against one half of a couple pushing a name the other half hates. I think you have to find something you both like.
I was the same about Elsie for a girl. I was even happy to go with Elizabeth after DP's mother, so she could be Elsie for short, but DP gets an equal say, and it's not to be. |

I'm sorry, but I think it's awful. Old fashioned and ugly.
