Hi,

To all of you wonderful people who will be starting Nursing next year, have you had a look at your text book lists yet?

Mine are all around $150 and there's 8 of them.

Has anybody considered borrowing from the library rather than buying??

My DH started nursing this year part time and between text books and nursing kit I think it came to $800.
In the beginning he borrowed a text book from the uni library and he found it difficult as he had to remember to keep returning and borrowing, one time he couldn't reborrow it as someone else asked for it. It was just easier to buy them, they will be used again in other subjects and in his future career

Try this for second hand books in your area Textbook Exchange

Alternatively book depository or amazon can be cheaper as well. (I got one last semester $50 cheaper at book depository)

I am not studying nursing but I have found that there are usually on 1 or 2 copies of the text book at the library and you can't borrow it for a semester and they are generally in high demand. "Technically" it is against copywrite to copy as much as you will need and there is no guarantee that the lecturer will give you a reading list in advance either.

I tend to buy my books cheaply or 2nd hand and then sell them afterwards which pays for the next round of books. Unfortunately you still have to outlay or the 1st round. Also be careful if the uni bookshop comes with computer codes for anatomy etc. If you buy second hand, it won't come with the codes and you may have to buy access separately which may negates the 2nd hand discount.

Hi

Some of the access codes aren't totally necessary, you can get access to some of the publishers quizzes free online, as I did this year with anatomy and physiology (Marieb).

Agree that nursing text books are expensive.

I agree they are expensive, I bought most of mine online using booko.com.au to find who was selling them cheapest. Mostly book depository was where I bought them. Have been able to sell a lot of them on ebay for close to what I purchased them for too so check ebay. (I will be selling the last of mine around Jan-Feb when most unis have their booklists- but mine are mostly MID books now)

My DD has just finished her second year and has found that the "recommended" books are often not needed at all. She now doesn't buy any books that aren't marked compulsory until the semester starts, and she's already saved a few hundred dollars this way.

We also use booko.com.au and will use either of the US or UK Book Depository sites, depending on which one's cheaper. Usually it's the UK one.

They are not necessary apart from a anatomy and phys. Nice to have but you can get by without them. Wait until you start and figure out wht you really need.

Use http://booko.com.au/ to find your books. I found I saved hundreds every semester. It compares book and shipping cost across a great number of suppliers including book depository us and uk, amazon, fishpond and lots more.

Also, if you a nearby to another uni that teaches nursing, you can often borrow textbooks from them (you need to get a caval card from you home uni library) and they may not be text at that uni so not checked out that often. I studied externally and borrowed from a uni near my mums. I could renew my loans online and would get them out for 6-9 weeks at a stretch that way.
