It was only last year I introduced my son to solids and water but this year with DD I have no recollection of what age I can start giving her water in a sippy cup.
Do I start her at the same time as solids (5-6months) or can u start before? |

I was told that if you are BF then they don't need water until you start solids.

DD is formula fed and went off her food for a week so I was advised to give her water at 3 months old to stop her from getting dehydrated in our extreme temperatures. She was 2.5 months old at the time.
She loves it, and still has it now, but formula is her main source of hydration. I'll give it to her more regularly when she starts on solids. |

DD is ff and has water each day. It is extremely hot here. She enjoys it and has no probs having it in between bottles of formula. She is 15 weeks. I have a sippy cup for her but at the moment just use her bottle.

What Carmen02 and littlemiracles said pretty much - little sips to start with. But, I think, as long as it is boiled water, ie not straight from the tap.

I'm not really sure, it like a PP mentioned, their milk is all they really need until solids. I first gave my bub water in a sippy cup at about 7 months. He didn't know what to do at first and just gurgled it around in his mouth and dribbled it out. It was only on a really hot day a few weeks ago that he really started drinking it.
It's summer now and even with milk, I would offer a baby water if it was fairly hot. This post has been edited by Dylan's Mummy: 21/12/2012, 10:20 AM |

Mine had sips of cool boiled water from birth out of a bottle. They were bottle fed.

I started giving them sips of water from a sippy cup when they started solids. So 6 mths for DD1 & DS, 5 mths for DD2.

My friend was told to give her baby very small amounts of cooled boiled water from a syringe on hot days basically from birth - he was fully breastfed, however it regularly hit over 40 degrees where they were living at the time, so I don't think that advice is run of the mill.
SIL was told to never give her babies water until they started solids. |
