Hi all.

I'm going in on Tuesday to have a fine needle biopsy done on a small cyst (.5cm) on my thyroid. I've been feeling this small lump in my throat for about 4 months and went to the ENT who diagnosed an irritation of my lower tonsils. Then had a throat ultrasound done last week which found it to be a small cyst.
It was noted to be a "complicated cyst" which freaks me out even more.

I'm trying to be positive but deep down I'm freaking out its cancer. All these horrible thoughts keep taking over. Can anyone tell me how long it'll take for the results of the biopsy?

I'm sorry you are going through this. I went through something similar earlier in the year, although mine was smaller (I couldn't feel it, they found it by a chance ultrasound).

I had two FNA (fine needle biopsies). The results came through within a couple of days. It was very quick.

Do you know why they called it a complicated cyst?

I have no ideas but just wanted to wish you all the best with the procedure and hoping that it is just a cyst that can easily be dealt with.

Hey mamabear,
The ENT said he didn't understand why they used the word complicated. He says they do it all the time at this particular ultrasound place. I googled and came up with complex which means there is fluid and solid matter within cyst. Thanks for your quick reply. Will keep an eye out for your PM.

My nodule has a solid portion too. That is the bit that they aimed for with the FNA. Mine turned out to be a benign nodule. It was a big relief to get that news, even though for me the chance of cancer was small.

I think it best to just keep busy mentally and physically until you get your results. No good can come from dwelling on it until then. FWIW, my mum has her thyroid removed. At the time is was explained to her that most lumps on the thyroid are caused by an auto immune disorder and are normally brought on by stress and / or trauma.

I'm sorry you're having this worry. I've just had a scan on an enlarged lymph node and before the scan I was really anxious and weepy, but I found keeping busy helped take my mind off it. And it turned out to be wonderfully boringly normal after all my worry. I hope you get good news.

My mum went through this earlier this year too. Her biopsy results were available within a couple of days (2 maybe?) - so thankfully it wasn't a long wait! Mums was bigger than that and it was causing her some pain and discomfort - but comes and goes which is kind of weird.

As hard as it is, try not to stress too much. It is much more likely to be "just' an annoying benign cyst than anything more sinister.

I had a similar diagnosis with a lump in my breast. The fine needle biopsy was a little difficult to get any fluid out be cause it was harder. Results came back in a couple of days and it's just a benign lump. Don't need to do anything ATM. Will get it checked regularly and will probably get it removed if it grows.

Dont worry yourself, it will be nothing sinister.

OP does it help that everyone i know who has had a thyroid nodule has not had cancer? most have had some sort of 'issue' to go along with the nodule (graves, hashimotos etc), and some have had to have it removed, but it's never been cancer.

And, if it is, every specialist i've spoken to has said that thyroid cancer is one of the best to have, as it is slow growing and usually contained to the one spot (mum has had half her thyroid removed, and has a solid nodule on the other half, and i've been to the majority of her appointments with her. the biopsy's aren't that pleasant, but they don't take to long to do, and results normally come in quickly)
