My friend is having identical twins and had her 12 week scan yesterday (she is closer to 13 weeks).
She has been advised that the twins are sharing the placenta but are in seperate sacs and that the Dr was fairly certain they are girls. Apparently this particular Dr (or technician - not sure which) is very good and unlikely to get it wrong. Obviously he didn't say it was 100% just that it was highly likely So what are the odds of him being able to really tell at 12 weeks - I thought it was pretty hard as the baby was not fully developed etc etc? They already have 1 little girl and the twins are a big IVF miracle/surprise that came about from having their last embryo transferred and it splitting. They are beyond ecstatic to be having these little miracles but I know in their heart of hearts they really wanted boys so am wondering if there is still hope for this? Any thoughts/advice/experiences much appreciated! This post has been edited by bubmakes3: 14/12/2012, 10:56 AM |

Of course there is still hope, mistakes can be made and 12 weeks is very early. BUT I would be thinking that he is right. He does it for a living and I doubt he would say anything if he wasn't pretty sure. I got told at 12 weeks with DS2 that she thinks he was a boy and shew as correct.

If he was using the nub theory then he would be correct, they can tell at 12 weeks that way. I had an obgyn do my 12 week scan and she told me 100% girl (based on nub or angle of the dangle as it is also called) and she was right.

I've had all of my 12 week scans done by very experienced sonologists and they've correctly predicted gender at each one (each time saying they were 80-85% confident).
On the positive side (speaking as someone who had a less than ideal identical twin pregnancy and was looking at having premature babies) I lost count of the number of times we were told we were lucky to be having girls. Apparently girl babies tend to do better if they are born prematurely. |

Both our kids were accurately picked at the 12 week scan.

Hi OP,
I was told during our 13 week scan, with 80% certainty that our baby was a girl, fast forward to the 20 week scan and the same sonographer then told us, with 99% certainty, that the baby was a boy |

At 12 weeks based on nub theory I was told girl. DS is very much a boy.
