Another thread reminded me of a major score DH and I had many many years ago, when we had just moved interstate and had very little money and had to kit out our house.

A new friend of DH gave us a big box of old kitchen stuff, saying it was all going to the op shop anyway and we could pick through it and then donate the things we didn't want. Cool. So amongst all the mismatched (though gratefully received) glasses + crockery, there was a jug. But not just any jug. A aqua blue aluminum jug. A FINK jug. Lucky DH knew what it was, I would have chucked it! I looked it up once and it's worth about $200. DH asked his mate if he wanted it and he said no, it didn't match his new kitchen gear!

As an avid op-shopper, I've found a few bargains. A double strand of natural pearls, antique, strung with catgut. A perfect black leather trench coat which I lost at the Bridge Mall Inn, back in the days I lived in Ballarat (damn those pesky goths).

Tell me, what persons junk has turned out to be your treasure?

Just recently I got 12 brand new Baby BeeHinds for 3 for $2. I felt so guilty I gave the op shop woman $20, then posted them straight away to a friend with a newborn using cloth nappies.

ETA: If the thread that inspired this was the engagement ring one, I think this is in really poor taste!

A leather 2.5 seater sofa, through a local FB garage sale page. They'd had it covered in their garage after deciding they didn't actually like it. I paid $50 for it

Ah No. 'twas inspired by a comment in the "worst gift" thread. Someone got a crappy regifted vase and it turned out to be worth 2000 bucks.

I got a Pucci handbag from an opshop for $2 about 20 yrs ago.

Not sure if it's genuine, but I like it anyway.

A beautiful art deco floor lamp with the original scalloped shade in a yellow brocade. Found put out in the alley behind our house ready for council collection. Something was wrong with it electrically; electrician DH replaced one small fitting and it worked perfectly.

I picked up lots of stuff in that alley actually - tables, frames, a big cabinet. We lived in Paddington in Sydney, and it seemed a lot of the wealthy people that lived around us would throw things away if they just got tired of it or if there was something minor wrong. Great for us!

The Op shops around here aren't very good, me and the girls go in at least once a week. The best thing I have bought so far is one of those foam things for your baby to lie on in the bath, it is brand new still in the wrapper for $4. Oh actually, I did get Tanna Ramsey (is that how she spells her name?) cook book brand new for $2.

Too many to name. So much so that I am more than happy to donate really good stuff to op-shops as I feel that I am 're-paying' the good op-shop Karma (If there is such a thing!)
