We are going to put out some rat traps, but the question is, what to bait them with? We have a skink living in the garden (about 20cm long). I'm pretty sure he's eating all the slugs and caterpillars which is fab. We also have a very well fed rat, which is living on my cherry tomatoes and soon to be also feasting on cucumber, capsicum and zucchini. Grrr. So, any ideas on what will attract the rat(s) but not the skink?

Can you net the plants? We had ssomething eating our limes before they were ready and a fruit net wrapped over the top of the tree worked a treat.

Yeah, that might end up being the solution. Everything is in pots so it's going to be pretty painful to net. (inner city terrace backyard garden!)

What about a no kill trap? That way, you can let the skink back out or poison the rat once caught?
I use these so that poisoned rodents don't go back out to be consumed by other native animals and inadvertently kill them. |

i have a rat under my house, we just used rat sack. last year we had a few too and got rid of them. but we have another floating around. yicky yucky awful things
|

The problem with just straight out ratsak, is that other animals may potentially eat it too. You risk lizards, possums, bandicoots and other natives getting poisoned.
Then there's the risk of secondary poisoning. The rodents that eat the poison don't die immediately and go off on their merry way. Cats, snakes and birds of prey (such as owls) then potentially will eat the rodent and die from the poisoning. Its a terrible thing to use (it's a slow, long, agonizing death from internal bleeding) and I do understand why it is used, but a few precautions could save many other non targeted animals. |

Yes, prior to DD we would have just used Ratsak and tried not to think about what it was doing to the rat. But now with a 20mo who still likes to put everything in her mouth, I just can't risk it. Thanks for the ideas, will see if I can convince DH that he can dispose of a live rat in a no-kill cage...
