I just got DDs report and in her English section she got

Overall Achievement - Emerging

Academic Criteria
Reading and Viewing - Demonstrating
Writing - Demonstrating
Speaking - Demonstrating
Listening - Advancing

Can someone please explain to me how with those Acdemic Criteria results her overall grade could just be Emerging which is two levels below the Demonstrating result. I am so confused, her grade on her last report six months ago was Demonstrating for Overall Achievement so something has changed dramatically I just can't see where except, Reading and Viewing six months ago was Advancing not Demonstrating and that is the only other change.

Don't have any advice but DS is in year 1 as well and his report is also not making any sense.
At one point his writing is at expected level and then it says he has very poor fine motor control and his writing is often difficult to read. The reason for this is that he rushes his work to finish first so he can play the computer, and get free time.

She also told me he is above where he needs to be for reading, maths and computers but again is at expected level.

The comments also say how well she is doing and how much she has improved I am hoping it is a typo but there is no one at school until the New Year to explain this to me which I think is quite slack.

I suspect with changes around Australia, some schools are reporting about a year level (ie Prep, or 1-2, or 3-4, or 5-6) so the grades reflect that she is where she should be by year 1, but the report should explain that better.

That does seem odd - I would have thought with those individual marks the overall achievement would be Demonstrating. Even with unusual weighting, I don't see how this can happen. Must be a mistake.

Writing and handwriting are completely different. You can be a brilliant writer whose work is near illegible, or you can be a calligrapher whose content is rubbish. Most of us are somewhere between the two.

But what do you meant here is noone at the school to explain it to you? It's only the 12th - where are all the teachers??? Surely if the class teacher has gone on early leave, one of the other year level teachers could cast their eye over it and make an assessment as to whether it is likely to be an error.....or the principal for that matter, who usually signs off on all the reports.

I just got DD year 1 report but we area graded a,b, c etc and then another colum for each area for effort. Not sure how it all works but Dd got mostly C and two D's, which doesn't sound great but I am fine with it knowing her teacher. Her teacher is lovely but let's just say a bit 'blonde', she has never mentioned any problems andi am sure that she forgets who is in year one and who's in year two, it is a composite class.

Good it is not only me that thinks it is odd. DD only dropped one grade in the Reading part from Advancing to Demonstrating so even with that I would have thought it would have only dropped to Developing not right down to Emerging (I would have expected to hear something about this before report time if it was that bad, but the teacher said everything was fine and no worries only one month ago.)

I will just have to wait and see what the school says, when someone comes back from holidays.

School finished Thursday last week. I phoned today and asked for the Head of the Junior School and was told she was on leave. Then I asked for someone else who could explain and apparently every single person in the junior school is already on leave (personally I don't believe her and think she has been told to hold all calls). I emailed the Head of the Junior School after I phoned and got a read receipt straight away so she is either there or sitting on her computer at home. I just found her direct dial number before from when she has phoned me previously and I will ring her direct tomorrow and hopefully she answers.

Depends on the school/state. My son (QLD private school) had his last day of school on the 30th of November, so there would be no teachers around to ask. However, we got report cards in the second last week of school and were given the option of an informal parent/teacher interview the following week to talk over reports if we felt we needed to.
