Im in the process of loading all our DVD's onto the ipad and also my external hard drive, purely for back-up reasons as the kids scratch the crap out of them. Some i can convert to itunes no probs but others are write protected. Is there a program i can use just to rip them?

Google a program called any dvd, made by slysoft.

I usually use DVD Fab, then DVD shrink.
