Posting here for traffic. My mum moved into a rental property about 5 weeks ago whilst her home is renovated. I am taking over the lease when her house is finished. (Private landlord and they have agreed to this) Anyway, the day after she moved in I tried to set up her tv using the aerial outlet in the lounge. Only a couple of channels would tune in properly, the rest said no signal. I informed the landlord, and she said she would get her husband top come over within the next few days and have a look at it. Fast forward 2 weeks, and still the husband has not been to look at it. I contact the landlord again, and she says her husband would come over a couple of days later, and that he hadn't been over yet as he had been too busy. This time he did come over and said that there was a problem with the aerial and he would organise for it to be looked at by a professional. Fast forward another 2 weeks, and noone has been and the landlord has not made any contact. I called the landlord, and she said that they had been busy still, and that she was organising some quotes. Another week later, and still nothing has been done. So what do I do? (or my mum do) I know it is just the tv reception, so in the scheme of things not too major as such, but when we signed the lease we did so on the proviso that everything in the property was working as it should, and obviously the tv aerial (I am guessing on the roof of the house) isn't.

It doesn't really help long-term, but you can still buy cheap antennas somewhere like d*ck Smith, just plug them into the power and your TV then wiggle the aerials around until you get reception. A bit old-school but better than nothing! I had one of these for about a year when I lived somewhere with the worst antenna connection ever.

QUOTE (casime @ 12/12/2012, 11:14 AM) It depends on if there is actually an aerial there at all. If there is no aerial on the roof, then the landlord is not obliged to provide one. It's not considered an essential service. Even if there is a wall point, it could have been installed by a previous tenant who took the aerial with them (have had that happen before, very annoying and I ended up having to get one installed myself). Yes there is an aerial on the roof, and 2 points in the house. We are able to get the signal for all the 7 channels (7, 72, 73 etc) and the ABC channels, but the others are showing no signal.

QUOTE (Carmen02 @ 12/12/2012, 11:32 AM) hope she can get it sorted out soon! We had a shocking tv aerial on our last rental got sick of it bit the bullet and decided on foxtel lol We also have foxtel, but it doesn't have the free to air channels as it is the dish thing on the roof in this area

QUOTE (Chief Pancake Make @ 12/12/2012, 08:17 PM) A friend had this issue. Basically if it wasn't working when she moved in they are not obligated to fix it. If it was working then broke during the tenancy they are obligated to fix it or compensate you for it.
Sorry But surely you would assume that the tv antenna is working when you are a prospective tenant?? Does that mean if I move in and the oven is not working, then I cannot expect the landlord to repair it as it is my fault for not checking the oven when I inspected the property?? There is an aerial on the roof, and points inside the house, so anybody would just assume that it was a working aerial.
