I'm only 8 weeks pregnant, but being that I have been tested for suspected whooping cough twice in the last 15 months (thankfully came back clear both times) I'm all too aware how much of a terrible disease it is. I'm due right in the heart of winter, and want atleast my DH, DD, and IL's to have the vaccine before baby arrives. I will possibly have to talk FIL around to it, so I was trying to get a timeframe in my head of when it is best to get him to have it, so I know how long I have to work on him IYKWIM.

Thanks

You can start talking him round right now cos the best time is before the baby is born! If he refuses then that is okay, he just can't be in contact with the baby til after he/she has had its first vax.

ASAP. The more adults who have their boosters the better the population is protected.

Yep now!

Vaccinations are free for grandparents too. Well they were in 2009 when I had DS.

Schemes for free boosters to parents/ grandparents come and go so what was around in 2009 may no longer be around now - also these schemes are state run so this varies according to which state you live in.

Whooping cough booster is good for around 7 - 10 years, not 5.

I'm not going to get into a debate about it as I personally know nothing, but 5 years is what my HP told me when I got a booster in 2010.

7 -10 years is in immunisation literature - but is fair to say it varies between people and exact time cannot be guaranteed - 5 years would be very conservative but wont hurt if you are happy to have one every 5 years. original.gif
