The whooping cough vacination was previously free for new parents and grandparents. Now it is only free for new mothers, meaning dads and grandparents are now out of pocket. Does anyone know whether there is any rebate available from either Medicare or Private Health Funds?

Not sure if this was the correct place to post this topic. Please move if somewhere else is more suitable.

Not through Medicare but if you have a pharmaceutical benefit on your PHI then you may claim, just get a receipt and talk to your fund

It's only been free for the past couple of years.
I had mine 4 years ago when it wasn't free - like now. Back then you needed a script and had to have it ordered in at the pharmacy. I could claim the excess from private health but from memory it wasn't much because it wasn't that expensive.
Not really sure how it would work now though.
As a previous poster said - what does it really matter what it costs.

AFAIK there is not a rebate through Medicare but my husband had it done before our baby was born and while our GP decided not to charge him the cost was less than $30.

The OP just asked the question. I imagine she just wants an answer in case she can get a partial reimbursement. If its available why not get it!?

Thanks for the replies. DS was born shortly after it stopped being free. My partner and mother both paid for their vacinations ($40 each through our local GP) and there was never a thought not to. But like many others we are going through a tough time financially so any money we could get back would be helpful.

I got a whooping cough vax last year, I found the cheapest way to do it was to go to the free Council vax clinic with all the babies. I still had to pay, but just paid them for the vaccine itself, the appointment was free.

Despite my DH and I having top extras we got no rebate from our PHI for our Boostrix.
It cost us the price of the visit and an extra $47.
